Study in Science and Engineering

With the mining and resources sector powering on in Queensland, the prospects for science and engineering students are bright.

An expected 38,000 jobs are to come from mining and construction in Queensland over the next three years, putting graduates in civil engineering and mechanical engineering in the box seat. (Source: Queensland Government)

As the environmental impact of this development needs to be managed, the demand for environmental scientists will grow along with the boom.

USC offers a range of science degrees to suit a variety of interests, including a Bachelor of Biomedical Science. This degree leads to career opportunities in biomedical research and education, biotechnology, communicable disease control, drug registration, medical sales and pharmaceuticals. It is also a base for further study in the fields of medicine, pharmacy, dentistry or veterinary science.

On the research front at USC, Commonwealth funding to the tune of $5.45 million over the next three years provides researchers with the opportunity to make advances in the areas of water, sustainability, forestry and aquaculture.

The Research Futures Project involves partnerships with other universities and promises to increase the impact of research outcomes for USC.

USC has a strong focus on scientific research with the Genecology Research Group and the Sustainability Research Centre.

The Genecology Research Group works in the areas of genetics, ecology, genomics and physiology. Research topics include sustainable production systems in aquaculture, forestry and horticulture; reproductive biology and physiology of plants and animals; commercially important traits in aquaculture, forestry and horticulture; and the effects of climate change on species distributions and reproduction.

The group has working relationships with the Queensland Government departments of Primary Industry and Fisheries, the Environment Protection Agency, and Natural Resources and Water.

The Sustainability Research Centre’s core focus is social, behavioural and economic sciences.

Valuable contributions are being made on a range of sustainability issues like coastal management, climate change and water management, from a local to international level.
