Jim combines study and travel in North Carolina

Jim Barker

Bachelor of Arts student Jim Barker says he chose USC for its variety of courses and location close to home.

But, after speaking to a former GO Program student, Jim decided to take his university experience further afield.

Jim says a semester at North Carolina State University (NCSU) allowed him to combine the thrill of travel with world-class education.

“I’ve always wanted to travel outside of Australia, and I figured it’d be awesome to study at the same time,” he said.

“Plus, I knew I’d be able to build networks and make myself some friends overseas.”

In choosing NCSU, Jim considered the courses on offer and his career ambitions.

“I was happy anywhere in the States, but NCSU has a large number of psychology courses,” he said.

Jim believes his GO Program experience will help his future career.

“Potential employers who see that I’ve gained a different cultural perspective from studying in another country will see me as a stronger candidate for employment,” he said.

Jim also acknowledges the support he received from USC staff in making his GO Program application and arrangements.

“Anytime I needed help I was given it quickly,” he said. “I felt like the centre of attention!”

GO get a competitive edge, says Holly

Holly Marder

Bachelor of Communication student Holly Marder was seeking a “wonderful personal and academic experience” when she chose to participate in the GO Program.

Holly says the course on offer at the Hochschule Darmstadt (University of Applied Sciences) in Germany was the best and most relevant for her degree at USC.

She also felt that Germany was a good, central base for travels around Europe.

“The best things were meeting so many foreign students and finally being able to converse in a foreign language after months of learning,” she said.

“Travelling Europe was also brilliant!”

Holly believes that studying overseas is invaluable to those who want to broaden their career opportunities.

“I feel that study abroad provides one with a competitive edge when it comes to the workforce, and displays a strong sense of independence and initiative,” she said.

Participating in the GO Program has been a life-changing experience for Holly.

“I would recommend the GO Program to other students a hundred times over,” she said.

“The personal development, as well as the academic enhancement for future career prospects, is undeniable.”

Holly appreciates the support she received when planning her semester overseas.

“[USC staff] were most instrumental in preparing me for my time abroad,” she said.

“They couldn’t have been more prompt and helpful.”
