Scholarships and bursaries for commencing undergraduate students

Scholarships for 2012

The University of the Sunshine Coast is offering the following scholarships to students in 2012:

Some scholarships are also available to students who commence their studies in Semester 2 of 2012.

To be eligible for any of these awards you must be a Commonwealth Supported Student, ie an Australian citizen, Australian Permanent Resident or New Zealand citizen. International students are not eligible to apply.

Guaranteed scholarship offer—all eligible applicants who achieve or have achieved an OP1 based on their secondary school results will be guaranteed a scholarship offer.

Scholarships will be awarded in accordance with University policies. Refer to related policies, rules, plans and procedures.

Please note: Application forms will be made available when the scholarship or bursary opens.

How to apply

  1. Refer to the bursary descriptor to determine which bursaries you may be eligible for. Each bursary has different eligibility and selection criteria.
  2. Complete the relevant application form.
  3. Scan or photocopy all supporting documentation.
  4. Email your application with all supporting documentation before the closing date to scholarships@usc.edu.au
  5. Late applications or any late supporting documentation will not be taken forward to the selection panel.

Scholarships overview

The Encouragement Foundation Rubgy Scholarships

Rugby Scholarships are available to new and continuing USC students. They are sponsored by individual donations from the Sunshine Coast Rugby Community. Individuals who want to encourage excellence in sport and education can make tax deductable donations to The Encouragement Foundation, who then ‘pool’ the money to fund these scholarships. This will enable students to focus on their sport, as well as their studies without having to worry about juggling work commitments.

This scholarship aims to promote leadership on and off the field, as well as promoting Rugby Union’s core values of teamwork, respect, enjoyment, discipline and sportsmanship.

Applicants should be able to demonstrate a high level of rugby ability/potential, as well as good academic standing at high school or through tertiary education. Successful applicants will have ability or potential to play at the Colts or Open level with the Sunshine Coast Stingrays.

Eligibility: New or continuing students enrolled, or intending to be enrolled, full-time in any undergraduate program
Selection criteria:
  • Good academic standing
  • Demonstrable high level of rugby union ability/skill/potential to play for a premier team
  • Extra-curricular and community involvement
Value: A$9,000 over 3 years or A$12,000 over 4 years

2012 scholarships will open 31 March–11 May 2012
A further release may be made in Semester 2, 2012. This will depend on the quality of applicants in the earlier round and if the funding allocation has been absorbed for 2012.
2013 applications will open 2 July–31 October 2012. Payment will be made in Semester 1, 2013.

USC Chancellor's Scholarships

The University of the Sunshine Coast Chancellor's Scholarships are awarded to recognise, reward and encourage academic excellence.

Eligibility: Students commencing full-time in their first undergraduate program in 2013, or students who commenced their first undergraduate program in Semester 2, 2012.
Selection criteria:
  • high academic achievement (OP 1- 6 or equivalent), and
  • an active involvement in extra curricular / community activities
Value: A$12,000 (A$4,000 per year for 3 years)
Number: Two (2) scholarships available

Renouf Family Scholarships

The Renouf Family Scholarships were established in 2008 by Sir Clem Renouf in memory of his parents for their sacrifice in giving him the best educational opportunity possible, under challenging circumstances.

Eligibility: Students commencing full-time in their first undergraduate program in 2013, or students who commenced their first undergraduate program in Semester 2, 2012.
Selection criteria:
  • high academic achievement (OP 1- 6 or equivalent)
  • leadership skills demonstrated through academic, extra curricular/community activities
  • financial need
Value: A$12,000 (A$4,000 per year for 3 years)

Tim Fairfax Regional Scholarships

The Tim Fairfax Regional Scholarships were established in 2008 by Mr Tim Fairfax to support students who must move away from their home residence in a regional or remote area to undertake their university studies.

Eligibility: Students from regional or rural area, commencing full-time in their first undergraduate program in 2013 or students who commenced full-time in Semester 2, 2012, who have had to relocate to study at USC.
Selection criteria:
  • high academic achievement
  • leadership skills demonstrated through academic, extra-curricular or community activities
  • financial need
Value: A$12,000 (A$4,000 per year for 3 years)

Vice-Chancellor's Merit Scholarships

The University of the Sunshine Coast Vice-Chancellor's Scholarships, awarded for the first time in 2010, are intended to recognise, reward and encourage academic excellence.

Eligibility: Students commencing full-time in their first undergraduate program in 2013, or students who commenced full-time in their first undergraduate program in Semester 2, 2012.
Selection criteria:
  • high academic achievement
  • leadership skills demonstrated through academic, extra-curricular or community activities
  • financial need
Value: A$6,000 (A$2,000 per year for 3 years)
Number: Forty (40) scholarships available

Caloundra RSL Sub-Branch Scholarship

Established in 2005 by the Caloundra RSL Sub-Branch to assist a local person with study-related expenses.

Eligibility:

Students commencing full-time in their first undergraduate program in 2013, or students who commenced full-time in their first undergraduate program in Semester 2, 2012.
Students who are permanent residents of the Sunshine Coast Regional Council area.

Selection criteria:
  • academic achievement
  • active involvement in extra-curricular and community activities
  • financial need
Value: Tuition fees for first year (approx value between A$4000 - A$7000) plus A$1000

Jalarema Indigenous Scholarship

The Jalarema Indigenous Scholarships are awarded to Indigenous students to recognise and encourage high academic endeavour. Preference will be given to students enrolled in health care or teaching programs.

Eligibility:

Indigenous Australian students commencing full-time in their first undergraduate program in 2013, or students who commenced full-time in their first undergraduate program in Semester 2, 2012.

Selection criteria:
  • demonstrated academic endeavour
  • financial need or other disadvantage
Value: A$6,000 over 3 years
Number: One (1) scholarship available

ANZ Bank Scholarship

It is the intent of this Scholarship to encourage students who have demonstrated leadership qualities in either their school or community to undertake their undergraduate degree at the University of the Sunshine Coast.

Eligibility:

Students commencing full-time in their first undergraduate program in 2013, or students who commenced full-time in their first undergraduate program in Semester 2, 2012. Students must be undertaking a program within the School of Business.
Students who have graduated from high school within the last five (5) years, who attended a high school in Sunshine Coast, Moreton Bay, Somerset, Gympie, Fraser Coast or South Burnett local government areas.

  • financial need

Westpac Sustainability Scholarship

The Westpac Sustainability Scholarship in was established in 2009 to encourage and support a student with a keen interest in sustainability. The intention of this scholarship to encourage students to consider a Major in Sustainability.

Eligibility:

2012 school leaver commencing full-time in their first undergraduate program in 2013 who will be enrolling in SUS101 Foundations of Sustainability in their first semester.

  • level of interest in sustainability

Les and Mary Hall Family Scholarship in Engineering

This scholarship was awarded for the first time in 2009 to support a student undertaking an undergraduate program in Engineering. The scholarship was established by the Hall family to honour Les and Mary Hall.

Eligibility: Students commencing full-time in their first undergraduate program in the Bachelor of Civil Engineering in 2013.

Poole Group Scholarship in Commerce

Established in 2005, the Poole Group Scholarship aims to support a student commencing a Bachelor of Commerce and intending a career in Accounting or Financial Planning.

Eligibility:

Students commencing full-time in the Bachelor of Commerce in 2013, or who commenced in Semester 2, 2012.
Students who have completed Year 12 within the last three years and are a permanent resident of the Sunshine Coast, Moreton Bay, Somerset, Gympie, Fraser Coast or South Burnett local government areas

Rod and Jan Forrester Scholarship in Business

The Rod and Jan Forrester Scholarship was established in 2001 to support a student undertaking a Faculty of Business program.

Eligibility:

Students commencing full-time in their first undergraduate program in 2013, or students who commenced full-time in their first undergraduate program in Semester 2, 2012. Students must be undertaking a program within the School of Business.
Students who have graduated from high school in 2012, who attended a high school in Sunshine Coast, Moreton Bay, Somerset, Gympie, Fraser Coast or South Burnett local government areas.

Sunshine Coast Daily Kathleen McArthur Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is to honour the memory of Kathleen McArthur, conservationist, author, educator activist and a founder of the Wildlife Preservation Society of Queensland in 1962.

Kathleen McArthur worked hard to preserve the area now known as Cooloola National Park. She was named the Sunshine Coast Daily Citizen of the Century in 2002.

The intent of this scholarship is to encourage and support a student with an active interest in the environment.

Eligibility:

Students commencing full-time in their first undergraduate program in 2013.
Students who have graduated from high school in 2012, who attended a high school in Sunshine Coast, Moreton Bay, Somerset, Gympie, Fraser Coast or South Burnett local government areas.

Selection criteria:
  • high academic achievement
  • demonstrated interest in and commitment to the environment
  • financial need

Vic Walker Memorial Scholarship

Established in 2000 by Jocelyn Walker in memory of her husband, Vic Walker, the scholarship is available to a graduate from Immanuel Lutheran College who commences a USC degree in the year immediately following their completion of secondary school.

Eligibility: Year 12 graduates from Immanuel Lutheran College
Selection criteria:
  • high academic achievement
  • demonstrated interest in and commitment to the environment

USC Equity bursaries for undergraduate students

The University of the Sunshine Coast offers equity bursaries to assist students from recognised equity groups such as people from low socio-economic circumstances, people with a disability or medical condition, indigenous students, students from non-English speaking backgrounds, refugees etc.

Commencing students are welcome to apply for Equity bursaries and the scholarships described above.

Eligibility:
  • Students enrolled or enrolling full-time any undergraduate program at USC. Part time students will be considered where there are extraordinary circumstances.
  • Students who hold or expect to hold a Commonwealth Supported Place ie Australian citizens, permanent visa holders or New Zealand citizens.
Selection criteria:
  • Financial need and/or other difficult personal circumstances.
Value: A$1,000 once only payment

Commonwealth Scholarships for Indigenous students

Indigenous students undertaking the Tertiary Preparation Pathway, their first undergraduate degree, or a graduate diploma in an area of National Priority (eg Education) who can make a case for financial hardship ^ are invited to apply for a Commonwealth Scholarship.
