How to apply

  1. Refer to the bursary descriptor to determine which bursaries you may be eligible for. Each bursary has different eligibility and selection criteria.
  2. Complete the relevant application form.  
  3. Scan or photocopy all supporting documentation.
  4. Email your application with all supporting documentation before the closing date to scholarships@usc.edu.au
  5. Late applications or any late supporting documentation will not be taken forward to the selection panel.

Ann McDougall Co-op Bookshop Memorial Bursaries

Established in 2009 by the University Co-op Bookshop to honour the memory of Ann McDougall, former manager of the USC Co-op Bookshop who passed away suddenly in 2008.

Eligibility: Students should be enrolled full-time in any undergraduate program at USC and must have completed at least eight courses.

Australian Decorative and Fine Arts Society, Sunshine Coast, (ADFAS) Scholarship / Internship

Established in 2002 to assist students interested in developing a career within the Arts, the total value of the scholarship is directed towards tuition fees and internship. Applicants must demonstrate a strong academic record, as well as good written and verbal communication skills.

Eligibility: Students enrolling in their second year in 2013 in the Bachelor of Arts (Computer Based Art and Design), Bachelor of Arts (Design and Communication), Bachelor of Arts / Bachelor of Business (Design and Marketing) or Bachelor of Computer-Based Design, who will have completed no less than eight (8) courses at the University of the Sunshine Coast.

Australian South Sea Islander Community Foundation Scholarship

Established in 2003, this scholarship provides financial assistance for living and study-related expenses.

The scholarship is paid as a stipend (fortnightly payment) each year the recipient is enrolled in an undergraduate program at USC. More information about Australian South Sea Islander Community Foundation.

Value: A$5,000 per year of full-time study or A$2,500 per year of part-time study

Catherine King Bursary

Established by the University in 2001 in memory of Catherine King, a second year Business student.

The bursary will be awarded annually to a student who is able to demonstrate academic success and financial need. Connection to the town of Imbil will also be taken into account.

Eligibility: First-year undergraduate students from Gympie Regional Council area, who are the first in their family to attend university.
Selection criteria:
  • demonstrated academic merit based on first year first semester results
  • demonstrated financial need
  • any connection with the town on Imbil will be highly regarded

Established in 2004 by the Co-op Bookshop to support students at USC with the costs of their studies.

Eligibility: Students must be enrolled full-time in any undergraduate program and have completed at least four courses.

Darcy and Heather Stevens Rural Bursary

Established in 2005 by Darcy and Heather Stevens to assist students from a rural area who relocate to attend university.

The bursary will be awarded based on academic performance and active involvement in the community from which the student relocated.

In assessing applications, preference will be given to students outside the Sunshine Coast Regional Council area.

Eligibility: First-year undergraduate students who have successfully completed first semester. Applicants should have graduated from high school in the previous twelve months and moved from a rural area to attend university.
Selection criteria:
  • demonstrated academic merit based on first year first semester results
  • active involvement in the community (eg sporting groups, volunteer work)

Dillon Folker Stephens Bursary in Regional and Urban Planning

Established in 2005, this bursary is awarded annually to a student who performed well in the first semester and is able to demonstrate financial need.

Students must have graduated from secondary school during the previous five years.

Eligibility: First-year students who have successfully completed first semester of the Bachelor of Regional and Urban Planning.

Dr Paul McCarthy Memorial Bursary

This bursary was established in honour of Dr Paul McCarthy, a doctor who was one of the servicemen killed in a helicopter crash in Asia in 2005.

Eligibility: Second year students enrolled full time in any of the Sport / Exercise Science programs and have completed at least eight courses.

The Encouragement  Foundation Rugby Scholarship

Rugby Scholarships are available to new and continuing USC students. They are sponsored by individual donations from the Sunshine Coast Rugby Community. Individuals who want to encourage excellence in sport and education can make tax deductable donations to The Encouragement Foundation, who then ‘pool’ the money to fund these scholarships. This will enable students to focus on their sport, as well as their studies without having to worry about juggling work commitments.

This scholarship aims to promote leadership on and off the field, as well as promoting Rugby Union’s core values of teamwork, respect, enjoyment, discipline and sportsmanship.

Applicants should be able to demonstrate a high level of rugby ability/potential, as well as good academic standing at high school or through tertiary education. Successful applicants will have ability or potential to play at the Colts or Open level with the Sunshine Coast Stingrays.

Eligibility: New or continuing students enrolled, or intending to be enrolled, full-time in  any undergraduate program
Selection criteria:
  • good academic standing
  • demonstrable high level of rugby union ability/skill/potential to play for a premier team
  • extra-curricular and community involvement
Value: A$9,000 over three years or A$12,000 over four years 
Number: Up to three (3) scholarships available
Status:

2012 scholarships will open 31 March–11 May 2012. A further release may be made in Semester 2, 2012. This will depend on the quality of applicants in the earlier round and if the funding allocation has been absorbed for 2012.

2013 applications will open 2 July–31 October 2012. Payment will be made in Semester 1, 2013.

Focus Professional Group Bursary

Established in 2005, this bursary is awarded annually to a student who has achieved a high academic standard.

The recipient will be an enthusiastic person with a range of interests and/or involvement in sports, community organisations or university clubs.

Eligibility: Second or Third Year Accounting students studying full-time.
Value: A$1,500

GHD Scholarship in Engineering

GHD have established two scholarships to assist fourth year students in the Bachelor of Civil Engineering at USC. A scholarship will be offered to a student doing a major in Construction Engineering and another will be offered to a student taking a Water and Environment major.

Eligibility: Students who will be enrolled full-time * in 2013 in the fourth year of a Bachelor of Civil Engineering and who are taking a major in Construction or Water and Environment are eligible to apply.
Value: A$5,000 each

Graduate Women Qld Inc (GWQ) Sunshine Coast Branch Bursary

(Formerly Australian Federation of University Women AFUW)

In awarding up to five (5) bursaries annually, the GWQ Sunshine Coast puts into regional practice the Federation's worldwide mission to promote the advancement of women through education.

These bursaries are available to students with a high grade point average. Applicants will be asked to submit documentation including references, proof of citizenship and proof of Indigenous background (where applicable).

Previous winners of GWQ awards are not eligible; however, unsuccessful previous applicants may re-apply.

MCU Bursary in Sustainability

Established in 2010, the bursary to reward and encourage a student enrolled in the Sustainability Major.

Eligibility:

Third year students who have completed at least 16 courses (192 credit points) and are undertaking the second year of a Sustainability Major (Any program).

Queensland Government and University of the Sunshine Coast Language Scholarships

The Queensland Government and University of the Sunshine Coast Language Schoalrship was established in 2011 to encourage the continuing study of languages. The establishment of th the program will demonstrate Queensland's focus on Languages Other Than English (LOTE) education for developing powerful and enduring trade and diplomatic relations.

Eligbility:

Students currently enrolled in an undergraduate program as a Commonwealth Supported student at USC who have successfully completed at least two (2) language courses at USC in Japanese or Indonesian.

Students must not be in receipt of a similar scholarship and not be a previous recipient of this scholarship

Selection criteria:
  • demonstrated academic merit in the Language courses undertaken
  • demonstrated interest in the Japanese or Indonesian language and culture
  • other matters that are relevant to the applicant's future professional success in the Japanese of Indonesian language discipline
Value: A$1,666 over two semesters
Number: One (1) for a Japanese language student and one (1) for an Indonesian language student.

STEPS is a not-for-profit community organisation which helps build better communities through empowering people to maximise their potential, and promoting the inclusion of people with a disability.

Eligibility: Students with a disability who have completed at least six (6) courses towards their undergraduate program (full-time or part-time enrolment).

Sunshine Coast Business Women's Network Bursary

The Sunshine Coast Business Women's Network Bursary is awarded to support female students who have, or have the potential, to make a significant contribution to business in the Sunshine Coast Region. Other selection criteria include financial need and academic merit.

Eligibility: Female students enrolled full-time in their second year or above of any undergraduate program at the University of the Sunshine Coast.

University of the Sunshine Coast Equity Bursaries

The University of the Sunshine Coast Equity Bursaries have been established to help support students living on low incomes or another disadvantage.

Eligibility:

Students who will be enrolled full-time in in their first undergraduate program. Part time students will be considered where there are special circumstances.
Students should hold or expect to hold a Commonwealth Supported Place ie Australian Citizens, Permanent Visa Holders and New Zealand Citizens.

Selection criteria:
  • demonstrated financial need
  • demonstrated disadvantage due to one or more equity group or status (outlined on application form)

University of the Third Age (U3A) Bursaries

U3A supports four merit-based second year equity bursaries. A $1,500 bursary is awarded each year to a student from each of the two faculties. A $1,000 bursary is awarded to a student in honour of Professor Paul Thomas, former Vice Chancellor of USC.

The University will consider applications from students from the following equity groups:

  • Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander peoples
  • students with a disability
  • students from rural and isolated areas
  • students from low socio-economic backgrounds
  • students from non-English speaking backgrounds who arrived in Australia in the last ten years
Eligibility: Part-time or full-time students entering second year of an undergraduate program, who have completed no more than eight (8) courses.
Value: 2 x A$1,500 and 1 x A$1,000

Urban Development Institute of Australia (Sunshine Coast branch) Bursary

UDIA is a professional body, representing the interests of the property development industry. The Sunshine Coast Branch is providing a bursary to enable USC students to attend network meetings, conferences and seminars. The aim is to further USC students’ knowledge and interest in the Institute, as well as providing greater involvement in property economics and development through UDIA’s member organisations.

Eligibility:

Students who completed at least twelve (12) courses towards the Bachelor of Property Economics and Development and are enrolled full-time

Selection criteria:
  • Demonstrated academic merit
  • Active participation in extra-curricular activities, community groups or professional networks or associations

 USC Rural and Remote Education Bursary

This Bursary was established in 2010 by the Tim Fairfax Family Foundation (TFFF).

The aim of the Rural and Remote Education Bursary is to assist Education students to gain valuable experience in a rural or remote location for Workplace Learning.

Eligibility: Students currently studying an Undergraduate Education program or the Graduate Diploma in Education.
Value: Up to A$2,500 depending on location and distance

USC Study Support Bursary

The USC Study Support Bursary was established by the generosity of private donors to help supprt USC students with their studies. The intention of the bursary is to support students from low socio-economic backgrounds with a preference for students who must work to support their studies. It is hoped that recipeints will be able to apply more time to studies and less to paid employment.

Eligibility:

Students currently enrolled in a USC undergraduate program, who have completed at least one semester of full-time study (48 credit points) with a GPA of 4.0 or higher.
Students must be enrolled full-time. Part time enrolment will be considered where there are exceptional circumstances preventing full-time enrolment.

War Widows Guild Bursary

The Maroochydore branch of the War Widows Guild of Australia (Qld) supports an annual award to provide financial assistance to the "next generation" of women. This bursary is awarded in honour of the memory of Wyn Rahilly.

Eligibility:

Second-year female Nursing students aged up to 25 years who are permanent residents of the Sunshine Coast Regional Council area.

WEIR Minerals Multiflo Mechanical Engineering Scholarship

Established in 2012, this new scholarship for Mechanical Engineering students is sponsored by WEIR Minerals Multiflo, an international and multi-national company. With a base at Coolum on the Sunshine Coast, the company employs around 9,000 people worldwide in engineering, minerals processing and global mining sectors.

The scholarship aims to help establish Mechanical Engineering at USC and broaden awareness of engineering careers. Applicants can view the WEIR Minerals Multiflo website to gain further understanding of the business, as well as employment opportunities in the sector.

Eligibility: Students studying Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical)

  • demonstrable extra-curricular activities / interests in engineering

Zonta Club of Blackall Range Bursary

The bursary will be awarded to a female student living in or from the area covered by the Zonta Club of Blackall Range (ie Blackall Range and Sunshine Coast Hinterland from Maleny to Kureelpa, including Conondale, Kenilworth and Palmwoods) who is undertaking tertiary studies.

Eligibility: Female students from Blackall range/Sunshine Coast Hinterland or women who went to school in the area.

Zonta Club of Caloundra Equity Bursary

The bursary will be awarded annually to support and encourage a young woman who has experienced educational disadvantage because of their personal circumstances.

Eligibility: Female students aged 21 years or under, first years who have completed at least four (4) courses of their undergraduate degree program or second year students. Applicants must be able to demonstrate that they are from one of the following equity groups:
  • Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander peoples
  • students with a disability
  • students from low socio-economic backgrounds

Zonta Club of Maroochy Mature-Age Bursary

These bursaries are offered to provide encouragement and support to a mature age female student from areas that were formerly a part of Maroochy Shire who returned to study after a break.

Eligibility: Part-time or full-time female students over 25 years of age entering into second year
Value: A$800 (full-time) or A$400 (part-time)

Zonta Club of Maroochy Jane M Klausman Women in Business Bursary

This bursary aims to support and encourage a female student studying a Business program. The selected student will be put forward to the district level of the bursary selection where the award has a value of A$1,000. If successful at the district level the student will then be nominated for the international level of the bursary where the value of the award is A$5,000.

Eligibility: Female students enrolled in the second year or beyond in a Business program
Value: A$1,000 if the Zonta Maroochy student is successful at the District level

Zonta Club of Noosa, Indigenous Women's Bursary

The Zonta Club of Noosa established the Indigenous Women's Bursary in 2011 with the aim of assisting an Indigenous woman through an undergraduate education program that will lead to a teaching career.

Eligibility:

Indigenous female students enrolled full time in an undergraduate Education program who must have completed at least four courses at USC with a GPA of 4.0 or higher.
Students must be able to demonstrate financial hardship (Receiving Centrelink Income Support or are prevented from continuing study due to financial hardship.)

Zonta Club of Noosa, Jane M Klausman Women in Business Bursary

The Zonta Club of Noosa was chartered in 1993, and since then has raised and distributed more than $500,000 to improve the status of women locally, nationally and internationally, including projects in conjunction with UNICEF and UNIFEM. The Club has recently established the 'Women in Business' bursary which is valued at $1000. It aims to assist women pursuing undergraduate degrees in business management to overcome gender barriers from the classroom to the boardroom. The bursary will be awarded to the successful applicant at the Zonta Club of Noosa Dinner meeting in June. 

As well as the $1000 Zonta Club Bursary, a national and international bursary are also available. The application form for the Zonta district level is also forwarded on to the Club for submission to the national and international awards.

Zonta International is a worldwide service organisation of female executives in business and the professions, working to improve the legal, political, economic, health, educational and professional status of women. Founded in 1919 in Buffalo, New York, USA there are now more than 35,000 Zontians in over 1,200 clubs in 68 countries and geographical areas. The name Zonta is based on the Sioux Indian word meaning 'honest and trustworthy', and the emblem is a composite of Sioux symbols.

Zonta Club of Noosa, Women in Science Bursary

This bursary is awarded to a female student aged over 21, or living independently, who has a demonstrated commitment to community and the environment.

Applicants will have a high grade point average and will have as their main income Austudy or another Centrelink pension or otherwise be prevented from continuing study due to financial hardship. It is also desirable that applicants reside in Noosa Shire.

Eligibility: Female students enrolled full-time in their second or above or Honours year in a University of the Sunshine Coast Bachelor of Environmental Science or Bachelor of Science with an Environmental focus.
