How to apply

  1. Read the bursary descriptor. Each bursary has different eligibility and selection criteria.
  2. Use only Adobe PDF Reader as the default softward to download our application forms.
  3. Type your application in a professional manner (check grammar and spelling).  
  4. Gather all supporting documentation (eg copies of payslips; evidence of income support).
  5. Email your application form to scholarships@usc.edu.au from your student email account.
    This authenticates you as the sender, so no scanned signature is required.
  6. Be sure to attach all supporting documentation and email these before the closing date. Late applications or supporting documentation will not be taken forward to the selection panel. 

NOTE:  Your computer requires the free Adobe Acrobat Reader for PDF forms. Software such as Mac PDF, ASUS and others are not compatible. A blank form will result unless you use Adobe as your default software.

Ann McDougall Co-op Bookshop Memorial Bursaries

Established in 2009 by the University Co-op Bookshop to honour the memory of Ann McDougall, former manager of the USC Co-op Bookshop who passed away suddenly in 2008.

Eligibility:

Students enrolled full-time in any undergraduate program:
Completed at least eight (8) courses.

Selection criteria:
  • demonstrated academic merit
  • demonstrated financial need

Australian Decorative and Fine Arts Society, Sunshine Coast, (ADFAS) Scholarship / Internship

Established in 2002 to assist students interested in developing a career within the Arts, the total value of the scholarship is directed towards tuition fees and internship. Applicants must demonstrate a strong academic record, as well as good written and verbal communication skills.

Students enrolling in 2nd year in 2014, having completed at least eight (8) courses;

Australian South Sea Islander Community Foundation Scholarship

Established in 2003, this scholarship provides financial assistance each semester for living and study-related expenses. Further information Australian South Sea Islander Community Foundation.

Eligibility: Australian South Sea Islander students who can validate their heritage
Value: A$5000 per year for full-time study or A$2500 per year for part-time study

Catherine King Bursary

Established by the University in 2001 in memory of Catherine King, a second year Business student. The bursary will be awarded annually to a student who is able to demonstrate academic success and financial need. Connection to the town of Imbil will also be taken into account.

Eligibility: First-year undergraduate students from Gympie Regional Council area, who are the first in their family to attend university.
Selection criteria:
  • demonstrated academic merit based on first year first semester results
  • demonstrated financial need
  • any connection with the town on Imbil will be highly regarded

Established in 2004 by the Co-op Bookshop to support students with the costs of their studies.

Darcy and Heather Stevens Rural Bursary

Established in 2005 by Darcy and Heather Stevens to assist students from a rural area who relocate to attend the University of the Sunshine Coast.

The bursary will be awarded based on academic performance and active involvement in the community from which the student relocated. Preference will be given to students outside of the Sunshine Coast Regional Council area.

Eligibility: First year undergraduate student;
Successfully completed first semester of study at USC;
Graduated from high school in the previous 12 months; and
Moved from a rural area to attend USC.
Selection criteria:
  • demonstrated academic merit based on first year first semester results
  • active involvement in the community (eg sporting groups, volunteer work)
Value: A$500

Dillon Folker Stephens Bursary in Regional and Urban Planning

Established in 2005, this bursary is awarded annually to a student who performed well in the first semester and is able to demonstrate financial need.

Eligibility: Graduated from secondary school in the past 5 years;
First year student, having successfully completed their first semester at USC; in
Bachelor of Regional and Urban Planning.

Dr Paul McCarthy Memorial Bursary

This bursary was established in honour of Dr Paul McCarthy, a doctor who was one of the servicemen killed in a helicopter crash in Asia in 2005.

Eligibility: Second year students enrolled full time in any of the Sport / Exercise Science programs and have completed at least eight courses.

The Encouragement  Foundation Rugby Union Scholarship

Sponsored by individual donations from the Sunshine Coast's Rugby Community, by individuals who want to encourage excellence in education and sport.  Tax deductable donations can be made to The Encouragement Foundation, who then ‘pool’ these funds for scholarships. This will enable students to focus on their sport as well as their studies, without having to worry about juggling work commitments.

This scholarship aims to promote education as well as leadership on and off the field, whilst also promoting Rugby Union’s core values of teamwork, respect, enjoyment, discipline and sportsmanship.

Applicants from within Australia and overseas may apply and should be able to demonstrate a high level of rugby ability/potential, as well as good academic standing at high school or tertiary education. Successful applicants will have ability or potential to play at the Colts or Open level with Sunshine Coast Stingrays.

Eligibility:

New or continuing students enrolled, or intending to be enrolled full-time; in
Any undergraduate program of study;
International students may apply, subject to meeting their individual Visa requirements 

Selection criteria:
  • good academic standing
  • demonstrable high level of rugby ability/skill/potential to play for a Premier team
  • extra-curricular and community involvement

GHD have established two scholarships to assist 4th year Bachelor of Civil Engineering students, undertaking a major in Construction Engineering and a major in Environment and Water.

Graduate Women Qld Inc (GWQ) Sunshine Coast Branch Bursary

To promote the advancement of women through education, 5 bursaries are offered annually. Available to students with a high grade point average. Applicants will be asked to submit documentation including references.

Previous winners of GWQ Awards are not eligible to apply. However, previous applicants who were unsuccessful may re-apply. Visit Graduate Women Qld Inc (GWQ) Sunshine Coast Branch

Queensland Government and University of the Sunshine Coast Language Scholarships

The Queensland Government and University of the Sunshine Coast Language Scholarship was established in 2011 to encourage the continuing study of languages. The establishment of the program will demonstrate Queensland's focus on Languages Other Than English (LOTE) education for developing powerful and enduring trade and diplomatic relations.

Eligbility:

Students currently enrolled in an undergraduate program as a Commonwealth Supported student; successfully completed at least two (2) language courses at USC in Japanese or Indonesian.

Students must not be in receipt of a similar scholarship and not be a previous recipient of this scholarship

Selection criteria:
  • demonstrated academic merit in the Language courses undertaken
  • demonstrated interest in the Japanese or Indonesian language and culture
  • other matters that are relevant to the applicant's future professional success in the Japanese of Indonesian language discipline
Value: A$1666 over two semesters
Number: One (1) for a Japanese language student and one (1) for an Indonesian language student.

STEPS is a not-for-profit community organisation which helps build better communities through empowering people to maximise their potential, and promotes inclusion of people with a disability.

Eligibility: Students with a disability who have completed at least 6 courses towards their undergraduate program (full-time or part-time).

The Sunshine Coast Business Women's Network Bursaries support female students make a significant contribution to business in the Sunshine Coast Region, or have potential to do so. Other selection criteria include financial need and academic merit.

Any undergraduate program, including Honours

The Encouragement Foundation Textbook Bursaries

The Encouragement Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation that seeks to support and encourage people to make a positive contribution.

Eligibility: Students enrolled full-time in their first undergraduate program at USC, who must have successfully completed at least four courses.

University of the Sunshine Coast Equity Bursaries

The University of the Sunshine Coast Equity Bursaries have been established to help support students living on low incomes or with other disadvantage.

Eligibility:

Students enrolled full-time in in their first undergraduate program.
Part time students will be considered with extenuating special circumstances.
Australian Citizens, Permanent Visa Holders and New Zealand Citizens.

Selection criteria:
  • demonstrated financial need, or other equity group 
  • demonstrated disadvantage due to an equity group or other status
Value: A$1000

USC Indigenous Scholarships (Honours, HDR or Post-graduate)

The USC  Indigenous Scholarships were established in 2011 to support Indigenous Australians wishing to pursue further studies at honours level or postgraduate study, including higher degrees by research (HDR).

Eligibility: Students commencing study at USC (i.e. existing students are not eligible to apply); studying full-time, part-time or on a sessional basis.
Value: A$4000 for full-time study load (pro-rata for part-time and sessional study). Plus remission of all course fees and the Student Services and Amenities fee.
Number: Four (4 ) scholarships were offered in 2012 and it is anticipated that this will be the same for 2013

USC Sports Scholarship

USC is endorsed as an Elite Athlete Friendly University (EAFU). USC sport and exercise science laboratories offer physiological and anthropometric testing to individuals and teams. USC laboratories are accredited by the Australian Institute of Sport in their National Sport Science Quality Assurance program (NSSQA). We support elite athletes who are combining sport and study through the EAFU network.

Applications for elite athletes will open on 18 February 2013 and close on 1 April 2013.

Eligibility: New or continuing students enrolled, or intending to be enrolled, in any undergraduate program. Full-time or part-time students will be considered
Selection criteria:
  • demonstrate a high level of achievement in any sport 
  • potential to continue to perform in your chosen sport at a high level
  • academic merit
Value: Up to A$6000 over three years (pro-rata payment for part-time study)
Number: One (1) scholarship available each year

University of the Third Age (U3A) Bursaries

U3A supports three merit-based equity bursaries for undergraduate students in 2nd year and above. Students are asked to demonstrate an appreciation of the need for Lifelong Learning. One of these bursaries will be awarded to a student demonstrating active community involvement, in honour of Professor Paul Thomas, former Vice Chancellor of USC.

The University selection panel will include representatives of U3A. They will consider applications from students from all equity groups.

Eligibility:

Part-time or full-time undergraduate students in 2nd year or above, with an appreciation of the need for lifelong learning

Value: 2 x A$1500 and 1 x A$1000
Number: Three (3) bursaries available

Urban Development Institute of Australia (Sunshine Coast Branch) Bursary for Bachelor of Property Economics and Development

UDIA is a professional body, representing the interests of the property development industry. The Sunshine Coast Branch is providing a bursary to enable USC students to attend network meetings, conferences and seminars. The aim is to further USC students’ knowledge and interest in the Institute, as well as providing greater involvement in property economics and development through UDIA’s member organisations.

Eligibility:

At least twelve (12) courses completed towards Bachelor of Property Economics and Development; enrolled full-time

Urban Development Institute of Australia (Sunshine Coast Branch) Bursary for Regional and Urban Planning

UDIA is a professional body, representing the interests of the property development industry. The Sunshine Coast Branch provides this bursary to enable USC students to attend network meetings, conferences and seminars.

By furthering USC students’ knowledge and interest in the Institute, as well as providing greater involvement in urban and regional planning through UDIA’s member organisations, students will be better equipped for managing their professional career.  
Eligibility: Students in the 3rd year, or have completed 3rd year, with at least 2 semesters of study to complete the Bachelor of Regional and Urban Planning degree
Selection criteria:
  • Demonstrated academic merit
  • Active participation in extra-curricular activities, community groups or professional networks or associations
Value: A$1500

USC Rural and Remote Education Bursary

Established in 2010 by the Tim Fairfax Family Foundation (TFFF). The aim of the Bursary is for Education students to gain valuable experience in a rural setting or remote location, as Workplace Learning and teaching experience.

Eligibility: Education programs or the Graduate Diploma in Education
Value: Up to A$2500 depending on location and distance
Number: Numerous, depending on funding available and the demand

USC Study Support Bursary

Available through the generosity of private donors and the USC Starfish Program. The intention of the bursary is to assist students from low socio-economic backgrounds, with a preference for students who must work to support their studies. It is intended that recipients will be able to apply more time to studies and less to paid employment.

Eligibility:

Full time students, in any undergraduate program
Completed at least one semester of full-time study (i.e. 48 credit points)
GPA of 4.0 or higher 

Value: A$2000 paid over one semester or A$4000 paid over two semesters of study
Number: Minimum 25

War Widows Guild Bursary

The Maroochydore branch of the War Widows Guild of Australia (Qld) supports an annual award to provide financial assistance to the "next generation" of women. This bursary is awarded in honour of the memory of Wyn Rahilly.

Eligibility:

Second-year female Nursing student aged up to 25 years; and
Permanent resident of the Sunshine Coast Regional Council area.

WEIR Minerals Multiflo Mechanical Engineering Scholarship

Established in 2012, this scholarship is sponsored by WEIR Minerals Multiflo, an international and multi-national company. With a base at Coolum on the Sunshine Coast, the company employs around 9,000 people worldwide in engineering, minerals processing and global mining sectors.

Zonta Club of Blackall Range Bursary

The bursary will be awarded to a female student living in, or from the area covered by the Zonta Club of Blackall Range (i.e. Blackall Range and Sunshine Coast Hinterland from Maleny to Kureelpa, including Conondale, Kenilworth and Palmwoods).

Eligibility: Female students from Blackall Range/Sunshine Coast Hinterland or women who went to school in the area.

Zonta Club of Caloundra Equity Bursary

The bursary will be awarded annually to support and encourage a young woman who has experienced educational disadvantage because of their personal circumstances.

Eligibility: Female students in their first or second year at USC; aged 21 years or under and have completed at least four (4) courses of their undergraduate degree at USC. Applicants must be able to demonstrate that they are from one of the following equity groups:
  • Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander peoples
  • students with a disability
  • students from low socio-economic backgrounds

These bursaries are to encourage and support mature aged female students returning to study after a break. Applicants should be from the Sunshine Coast regional area.

Zonta Club of Maroochy Jane M Klausman Women in Business Bursary

This bursary aims to support and encourage a female student studying a Business program. The selected student will be put forward to the district level of the bursary selection where the award has a value of A$1000. If successful at the district level, the student will then be nominated for the international level bursary, where the value of the award is US$5000.

Eligibility: Female Business students enrolled in second year and above (including Honours)
Value: Nil bursary offered for 2013; Zonta Maroochy will forward applications to the District level

Zonta Club of Noosa, Indigenous Women's Bursary

The Zonta Club of Noosa established the Indigenous Women's Bursary in 2011 with the aim of assisting an Indigenous woman through an undergraduate Education program that will lead to a teaching career.

Eligibility:

Indigenous female students enrolled full time in an undergraduate Education program; Completed at least 4 courses at USC with a GPA of 4.0 or higher;
Demonstrated financial hardship (e.g. receiving Income Support from Centrelink), or prevented from continuing their study due to financial hardship. 

Value: A$1000

Zonta Club of Noosa, Jane M Klausman Women in Business Bursary

The Zonta Club of Noosa was chartered in 1993, and has raised and distributed more than $500,000 to improve the status of women, including projects in conjunction with UNICEF and UNIFEM. The 'Women in Business' bursary aims to assist women to overcome gender barriers in the Boardroom.

The successful applicant will receive their Award at the Zonta Club of Noosa dinner meeting in June. The application will also be forwarded for submission to the national and international award of up to US$5000.

Zonta International is a worldwide service organisation of female executives in business and the professions, working to improve the legal, political, economic, health, educational and professional status of women.

Eligibility: Female students enrolled full-time in second year or above, in a Business program.

Zonta Club of Noosa, Women in Science Bursary

This bursary is awarded to a female student aged over 21, or living independently, who has a demonstrated commitment to community and the environment.

Applicants will have a high grade point average and demonstrated financial need (i.e. Austudy or other Department of Human Services payment), or be otherwise prevented from continuing study due to financial hardship.

Eligibility: Female students enrolled full-time in 2nd year or above (including Honours), in 
Bachelor of Environmental Science or Bachelor of Science with an Environmental focus.
Value:

A$1000 and A$500
