Student Engagement
Student engagement refers to the activities and conditions that students are involved in, which are likely to generate high quality learning.
Student engagement in learning is a key to success in your first year of university. Students who interact with their peers, academic staff and the university community are more likely to be motivated to study, form friendships and peer networks and persist with study beyond the first year.
Starting at university can be challenging. Students face a wide range of expectations, challenges and goals on a daily basis. To help you succeed in your studies, follow these practical tips for success at university:
Steps for Success
Step 1:
Turn up to class
Don’t be tempted to only access online lectures. You’ll pick up information from lectures and other students’ questions that you won’t get online. Attending class helps you to access your future professional network.
Step 2: Get to know your tutor
Don’t be afraid to ask questions in class. There are no stupid questions and most of your classmates probably need the same information that you do. Find out when your tutor’s consultation times are and ask relevant questions about the course or check if you are on the right track with an assignment. It will make your course more interesting and will help you learn about course requirements.
Step 3: Be organised
There is no right way to be organised. Everyone has a different approach but you do need a method that keeps you on top of your assignments and helps you to prepare for exams. Utilise your student diary and wall planner and don’t leave it to the last minute to get started.
Step 4: Get a mentor
A student mentor is an experienced student who has been there and done that. A mentor can answer general questions about the University, give you information throughout the semester about the services available to students and be a friendly face on campus. To register for a student mentor complete the Student Mentor Program Registration Form and return it to Student Services.
Step 5: Be involved
Students who connect with others in the first six weeks are more likely to stay at university and finish their degree. Visit the Student Guild for information about student groups and activities on campus.
Step 6: Be kind to yourself
Make sure you sleep, exercise and eat nutritious meals, and spend time with people you care about and on your other interests. Balance is the key to maintaining the important aspects of your life.
