University Skills in Community
This free* course is for anyone thinking of taking the first steps to returning to study.
It is specially designed for adults of all ages who have not done formal study for some years, or who did not finish high school.
It is also available to those already studying, but still needing skills support to manage study more effectively.
About the course
The course aims to:
- create a cooperative group environment for learning.
- build your confidence and skills in a supportive environment.
- turn your current formal and informal learning abilities gained from work and life experience into academic reading, writing, speaking and listening skills
The course is taught by an Academic Skills Adviser from Student Services at the University of the Sunshine Coast.
It is open to adults, or those turning 18 during the year in which the course is held.
Workbooks are provided for the duration of the course.*
There are no set tests, homework, assignments or exams.
Location and times
Throughout the year, the course is offered at locations in Maleny, Caloundra, Maroochydore, Noosa, Nambour and Gympie as well as the main USC campus in Sippy Downs. The next courses will be at:
- The "J" at Noosa Junction – Thursdays 10 May, 17 May, 24 May, 31 May, 7 June
- USC campus Sippy Downs – Tuesdays 8 May, 15 May, 22 May, 29 May, 5 June
They are held from 6–8pm, weeknights, over five weeks.
Course completion
Should you wish to continue on to TAFE or university study, an adviser from USC will be in attendance at your last class to answer any questions you have about the next steps to take.

Time Management, Proofreading, Grammar, Punctuation and Editing
Week 2
Writing Skills: From the paragraph to the essay
Week 3
Listening skills, note-taking and reading skills
Week 4
Referencing: How to cite sources of research. Reading skills and note-taking
Week 5
Being a student: Examining a university website and understanding how an online learning system works (class visit by learning/career adviser)
