Profile

Maatakiri Te Ruki arrived in Australia in 2005 and always had an interest to work with, and learn from, Indigenous peoples. After working in the Timetables Office, Academic Facilities at University of Queensland from 2005 to 2007, she took on a three-month contract as Cadetship Coordinator at the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies Unit at the University of Queensland. She was then offered the Office Manager position in the Weemala Indigenous Unit at Australian Catholic University, Banyo Campus, and in 2009, Maatakiri returned to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies Unit at the University of Queensland to help coordinate and manage the Indigenous Tutorial Assistance Scheme (ITAS). This role led her to the University of the Sunshine Coast where she now works as an Indigenous Services Officer in Student Services, helping students achieve academic success.

Maatakiri studied and worked at Te Wānanga-o-Raukawa, a Māori tertiary provider established to help develop bilingual and bicultural students across many disciplines. This is where Maatakiri discovered “who she was” and “where she came from”. It is this knowledge of self, of identity and of culture that she wishes to share with other students. Maatakiri is also a volunteer radio broadcaster for her Māori community at Radio 4EB 98.1 FM, Brisbane’s only full-time ethnic community radio. In her spare time, Maatakiri enjoys salsa dancing; spending time with her children and grandchildren, and she is making plans to begin her PhD study in 2012 researching Indigenous Support Services in Australia, Aotearoa/New Zealand and Canada.
