Academic Director

Professor Emeritus Merv Hyde AM is an educator and psychologist. He held a number of senior positions at Griffith University, including that of Chair of the Academic Board. He is currently Professor Emeritus of Griffith University, Academic Director of the International Projects Group and an active researcher at the University of the Sunshine Coast. He has been a University Auditor for 10 years and is now a member of the Register of Experts in Higher Education for the Australian Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency. He has been a World Bank Technical Consultant and has worked in many nations including Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, USA, Canada, Italy, Ireland, the United Kingdom, Sweden and Norway. He is a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for services to education in Australia and Indonesia. He has a Bachelor, a Master and a PhD degree of Education from the University of Queensland.

Head, School of Science, Education and Engineering

Professor Noel Meyers leads the School of Science, Education and Engineering which includes the International Projects Group.
Professor Meyers attended the 2009 United Nations Copenhagen World Conference on Climate Change as a special advisor to the Governor of Papua Province, H.E. Barbabus Suebu, a member of the official Indonesia Delegation. He encourages the creation of programs to enhance the quality of life and economic abundance of people in the Asia Pacific Region.

International Partner

Adjunct Professor Willi Toisuta, is a former Rektor (Principal) of Universitas Kristen Satya Wacana, Secretary General of the Indonesian University Accreditation Board and member of many major Government bodies in Education has a long-term connection with Australia. He has a PhD in Education planning from Macquarie University, is an Adjunct Professor at the University of the Sunshine Coast and also holds an Honorary Doctorate in Law (DR.HC) from the Kwansei Gakuin University, Nishinomiya-Osaka, Japan.


Deputy Academic Director

Dr Bill Allen is a Senior Lecturer at USC, has worked in teacher education particularly in the areas of senior curriculum, and in  post graduate coursework programs specialising in curriculum, action research and assessment. He has published in areas ranging from curriculum policy, assessment at Universities, history of education to University student experiences. He has a Bachelor of Arts from Durham University, United Kingdom, a Master of Educational Management and an Ed.D from the University of Western Australia.

Program Advisors English Language

Dr Michael Carey has taught and conducted research in linguistics and English language acquisition since 1992 in interlanguage speech acoustics, perception and pronunciation,
academic writing, language assessment and IELTS preparation. He has a Bachelor of Arts, English and Linguistics from the University of Macquarie, a Diploma of Education from the University of Western Sydney, a Certificate of TESOL and a PhD in Speech Science from the University of Macquarie.

International Development Specialist

Alan Atwell, has managed or directed over $200 million of AusAID, ADB, World Bank, UN and private sector projects since commencing his work in the development field in 1992.
Alan spent 10 years working on development projects in the Pacific mainly on education and health projects in PNG, Marshall Islands, Kiribati, Tuvalu, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, and Fiji. Between 2002-2011, Alan lived in Indonesia and worked on a range of Education, Health, Environment, Small Business Development, and Reconstruction projects in Aceh, Nias and Padang culminating in the direction of the construction of 8 Health centres in Padang Pariaman after the devastating 30th September 2009 earthquake.
Currently, Alan continues his work in development through the international programs managed at USC and also through consultancy work on the Mongolia-Australia Scholarship Program and on various scholarship and HRD initiatives in Indonesia supported by AusAID.
Mr Atwell speaks Indonesian well and has an Ass.Diploma in Business Management from TAFE, a Bachelor of International Business from Griffith University,a Diploma in Export Management from the Australian Institute of Export, a Graduate Diploma in Development Studies and a Master in Community and International Development from Deakin University.

Manager

Ms Suzanne Burford has worked with international development agencies in Australia and Indonesia in projects focused on education, governance reform and international security. Ms Burford is fluent in Indonesian and she has a Bachelor of Arts, International Relations (Honours) from the University of the Sunshine Coast and a Masters in International Development from RMIT University.

Research Officer

Ms Ann Robertson has extensive experience in project design and proposal writing, through her current work for IPG and her previous position as Academic Coordinator of Short Term Programs for USC International. Her background is in second languages education and teacher professional development, and she also contributes to IPG programs in the areas of English language development and Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL). She has a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Sydney, Bachelor of Laws from the University of Sydney, Post graduate Diploma of Education, and a Masters in TESOL from the University of Southern Queensland.

Research Officer

Ms Jacqueline McConnell has worked with international governments and partners, universities and museums in research, business
management, aid and development projects. She is currently learning Indonesian language. She has a Bachelor of Science from the University of London, United Kingdom, a Bachelor of Arts, a Certificate of Foundations of University Teaching, a Bachelor of Arts, Australian and Culture Studies (Honours) from the University of the Sunshine Coast and is currently completing a PhD at the University of Queensland.

Project Coordinator

Mrs Rama Brierty has worked in Community Developments on the Sunshine Coast, is a NAATI qualified (Indonesian) interpreter and has taught Indonesian language at USC for more than 10 years. She has a Diploma of Tourism from the University of Udayana in Bali, Indonesia and a Bachelor degree of Arts, Community and Social Study and Communication from the University of the Sunshine Coast.

Project Officer

Dr Inez Mahony has a distinguished record of academic excellence. Her research has a focus on various aspects of Indonesia including anthropological studies, journalism and human rights. She has been involved as a project manager, research officer and independent researcher with Indonesia-focused research projects and initiatives for the past 10 years, and has worked with government and non-government organisations in Indonesia. Inez has a PhD in Journalism from the University of Queensland.

Monitoring and Evaluation Officer

Dr Untung Waluyo, is a lecturer in the Education
Faculty University of Mataram, Lombok, Indonesia who has worked in schools,
Institutions and community development in Indonesia
with governments and non-government organisations
Particularly aid and development agencies over the last 20
years. At present, he is in the final stages of completing a PhD in Education at the University of the Sunshine Coast.

Monitoring and Evaluation Officer

Mrs Henny Soepriyanti, is a lecturer in the Education Faculty University of Mataram. Lombok, Indonesia. She has worked for schools and community development programs (in particular women empowerment programs in Lombok) for over 20 years. She has a Master degree in TEFL (Teaching English as A Foreign Language) from the Ohio State University, USA. And she is currently completing a PhD in Education at the University of the Sunshine Coast.

Finance Assistant

Mrs Larissa Middleborough has worked as a manager in retail industry and as a cost accountant in mining industry in Russia. She deals with the financial aspects of the various projects that IPG undertake. She is fluent in Russian and has a Bachelor of Economics from the University of Economics in Ekaterinburg, Russia and a Bachelor of Business in Accounting from the University of the Sunshine Coast.

Projects Assistant

James Morse has played an active role in several projects including a Cambodian Coastal Tourism and Building leadership Capacity in Papuan Principals. James has a Bachelor degree in International Relations and a diploma of International Business from Griffith University.

Administration Assistant

Ms Nyssa Bovenkamp has extensive office administration and customer relations experience within the higher educational sector. She has worked in various customer support and team supervisory roles within USC since 2004.

Intern

Ms May-Elen Vinskei, has co-operated with several NGOs as a volunteer. She is fluent in Norwegian and speaks Indonesian well. Ms Vinskei is currently undertaking a Bachelor of Arts, Development Studies, International Relations & Indonesian at the University of the Sunshine Coast.
