Profile

Dr Mark McKean is currently completing a three-year Post Doctoral Research program heading up 'Fitness Research'. This program commenced in 2009 with three key pillars of research that will focus on the fitness industry and the populations, communities and environments that are related to the fitness industry. Dr McKeans research into movement and coordination of the lower limbs in squatting and muscle strength balance in the shoulder girdle for kayaking has influenced the manner in which such exercises and training principles are used worldwide.

Dr McKean has an extensive background in fitness and strength and conditioning. Dr McKean has coached athletes in 28 different sports, and 18 to international level including Olympic and World Championship medals in eight sports. Currently he is an Accredited Exercise Physiologist with ESSA, a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist through NSCA America, a Level Two Strength and Conditioning Coach through ASCA, and a Level 3 Exercise Professional with Fitness Australia. Dr McKean has provided consulting services to sporting and fitness organisations and conducted workshops and lectures both nationally and internationally for Fitness China, NZ Rugby Union SANSA referees, NTID Kayaking program, FILEX, NETFIT, Australian Fitness Network, and Australian Institute of Fitness.

Dr McKean has also worked in the fitness industry for more than twenty years, serving on the board of Fitness Qld for six years, and acting as a member on industry reference groups for Fitness Australia and ESSA. Dr McKean has received awards for the Australian Fitness Network Author of the Year 2001, Contribution to the Australian Fitness Industry in 2002, Australian Personal Trainer of the Year 2003, and the SRQ Outstanding Contribution to the Fitness Industry Award in 2008. Dr McKean is also a regular author for a number of Australian industry magazines.
