Profile

Phyllis Araneo comes to academia with a background based in the visual arts. Her career includes art directing and graphic arts management in the New York Metropolitan area. Inspired by nature, her work has been reproduced on prints, cards and home wares which have been distributed worldwide.

Through a Master of Creative Arts degree, she explored the resurgence in contemporary culture of an iconic image representative of humanity’s relationship with the natural environment. The study, published as a book in 2010 by VDM Verlag, analysed the meanings and messages conveyed by the image throughout history as well as investigated how visual information can transform thought and invoke action within societies.

Phyllis’ current research is focused on evaluation and optimisation of learning outcomes in the science based core course entitled Environment, Technology and Sustainability here at USC. The course is delivered to a multi-disciplined, mostly first year student cohort and aims to increase science based knowledge and understanding.

Her research is specifically interested in how increased understanding of science can enhance environmentally responsible behaviour in the citizenry.
