Profile
Dr Fraser Russell obtained his PhD from the Department of Pharmacology, University of Melbourne (1994), where he investigated regulation of β-adrenoceptors in heart. He completed successful post-doctoral studies in the Clinical Pharmacology Unit, working with Dr Anthony Davenport at the University of Cambridge, UK (1994-1998), and then in the Department of Anatomy and Structural Biology, University of Otago, NZ working with A/Professor Ian McLennan (1998-2000). He returned to Australia in 2000 to take a Research Fellow position in the Department of Medicine, University of Queensland, studying the cardiostimulatory effects of urotensin-II in human heart. In 2005, Dr. Russell accepted a Lecturer appointment at the University of the Sunshine Coast.
Dr Russell is a Senior Lecturer in Biochemical Pharmacology. He is conducting a placebo-controlled, double-blinded trial investigating mechanisms for improved cardiovascular function in subjects with hypertension following dietary intake of omega-3 fatty acid supplements. Cell-based work is also examining the effect of omega-3 fatty acids on inflammatory signaling pathways and on oxidative stress. In addition, he is investigating the effects of the novel wound healing agent, OPAL A, on vascular function. Dr. Russell is an active member of the Australasian Society for Clinical and Experimental Pharmacologists and Toxicologists (ASCEPT, 1989-present), Faculty Higher Degree by Research Coordinator, and member of the Editorial Board of ISRN Cardiology (2011-present).
