Part A: Preliminary
1. Purpose of policy
This Policy outlines the selection criteria and basis for the Award of a University Commendation for Academic Excellence.
2. Application of policy
A University Commendation for Academic Excellence may be awarded to any graduating student in an undergraduate award program, (other than a one year Honours program).

3. Determination of the Award
3.1 For the purposes of the award of a University Commendation for Academic Excellence, “academic excellence” means the achievement of a Cumulative Grade Point Average of 6.5 or better (refer to Grades and Grade Point Average (GPA) – Academic Policy).
3.2 Students who are eligible for consideration but who have completed less than 192 units of study at the University will have their performance in any previous studies awarded as credit taken into account in determining the award of a University Commendation for Academic Excellence.
3.3 For students identified under Point 3.2 above if, when credit awarded for previous studies are taken into account, their overall Grade Point Average remains above 6.5 then an award will be conferred. If any credit transfer granted for previous studies cannot, for whatever reason, be equated to a USC standard grade, or credit has been awarded on the basis of Recommended Prior Learning then an award will not be conferred.
3.4 The award of a University Commendation for Academic Excellence will be determined by the Director, Student Administration in accordance with this policy and will be advised to the Deputy Vice Chancellor. Details of students to be awarded will also be forwarded to each Executive Dean.
3.5 Determination of the award will be made prior to each Graduation Ceremony and will include consideration of all students who have been graduated in an undergraduate award program, (other than a one year Honours program) since the last Graduation Ceremony.
3.6 A notation stating that a University Commendation for Academic Excellence has been awarded will be included on the recipient’s statement of academic record.
3.7 The award of a University Commendation for Academic Excellence will be notified to Academic Board and will be acknowledged at a Graduation Ceremony.
