Part A: Preliminary
1. Purpose of policy
This policy outlines the basis for the awarding of University and Faculty Medals which recognise and formally acknowledge those graduates who have demonstrated the highest academic levels of achievement in their undergraduate studies.
The policy also serves to provide a tiered criteria framework for distinguishing between the level of academic achievement which is recognised by a University Award, and the level of academic achievement which is recognised by a Faculty Award.
2. Application of policy
This policy applies to all graduating students completing a three or four year undergraduate degree program who have undertaken at least 192 units of study at the University.
3. Definitions
In this policy the following definitions apply:
Cumulative Grade Point Average. This is based upon all courses completed at USC as part of the student’s academic career, including courses completed in any other program within that career. See Grades and Grade Point Average (GPA) - Academic Policy.
Concurrent Double Degree. A combined qualification with one program code that leads to the award of two degrees in the same career level. The two degrees are undertaken concurrently, with the student graduating from both programs at the same time.
Faculty refers to any of the Faculties as determined by the University at the time of the students graduation.
Graduating Student means a person who is enrolled in an undergraduate degree program offered by the University who has satisfied requirements for the award of that specific program. For the purposes of this policy students completing a one year Honours Program or Associate Degree are excluded.
Part B: Policy
4. Determination of award
4.1 A University or Faculty Medal may be awarded to graduating students enrolled in a three or four year Bachelor’s degree, in recognition of exceptional academic excellence.
4.2 To be eligible for consideration the student must have undertaken at least 192 units of study at the University. Students who do not meet this criteria will be considered for a Faculty or University Commendation for Academic Excellence.
4.3 To be eligible for the award of a University Medal a student must have achieved a final Cumulative Grade Point Average of 6.80 or more (refer to Grades and Grade Point Average – Academic Policy).
4.4 To be eligible for the award of a Faculty Medal a student must have achieved a final Cumulative Grade Point Average of 6.60 to 6.79 (refer to Grades and Grade Point Average – Academic Policy).
4.5 Students graduating with a Concurrent Double Degree will be eligible for consideration for a single Faculty or University medal on the basis of their Cumulative Grade Point Average (refer to Grades and Grade Point Average - Academic Policy).
4.6 The recipients of a University Medal will not be eligible for the award of a Faculty Medal.
4.7 The recipients of University and Faculty Medals will be determined by the Director, Student Administration in accordance with this Policy and will be advised to the Deputy Vice Chancellor. Details of students to be awarded will also be forwarded to each Executive Dean.
4.8 Determination of the Awards will be made prior to each Graduation Ceremony and will include consideration of all students who have been graduated in an undergraduate award program, (other than a one year Honours program) since the last Graduation Ceremony.
4.9 A notation stating that a University or Faculty Medal has been awarded will be included on the recipient’s statement of academic record.
4.10 The award of a University or Faculty Medal will be notified to Academic Board and will be acknowledged at the appropriate Graduation Ceremony.
