Part A: Preliminary

1. Purpose of policy

The purpose of this policy is to set the conditions under which the Vice-Chancellor and President recognises and rewards exceptional staff performance through the annual award of medals.

2. Application of policy

This policy applies to all staff and members of University.

Part B: Policy

3. Purpose of Vice-Chancellor's medals

3.1 The purpose of the Vice-Chancellor’s medals is to recognise and reward exceptional staff performance that is consistent with the University’s mission and goals.

4. The medals

4.1 The Vice-Chancellor and President may award medals in the following categories:

  • Learning and Teaching (for contributions to the advancement of learning and teaching)
  • Learning and Teaching – Sessional Staff (for excellence in facilitating student learning)
  • Research (for contributions to the advancement of research and/or research training)
  • Engagement (for contributions to the advancement of University engagement with the community)
  • Service (for contributions to the advancement of service to the University)

5. Award of medals

5.1 Vice-Chancellor’s medals are awarded for exceptional performance.

5.2 Staff with a full-time or fractional appointment who have been employed by the University for at least two years by the end of the year in which nominations are called for, except staff who have received the same medal within the past three years, are eligible to be nominated for the learning and teaching; research; engagement; and service medals.

Members of University Executive and Senior Staff Forum are not eligible for nomination.

5.3 Sessional staff who have been employed by the University for at least four teaching periods by the end of the year in which nominations are called for, except staff who have received the same medal within the past three years, are eligible to be nominated for the sessional staff medal.

5.4 Staff, students (at least 10 required), members of the University community, and members of the wider community may nominate staff for the Vice-Chancellor’s medals.

Self-nominations will not be accepted.

5.5 Staff accepting nomination for a Vice-Chancellor’s medal complete and submit the Response to Criteria for Vice-Chancellor’s Medal form.

5.6 All of the medals may be awarded to individual staff or teams of staff. More than one individual or team may be awarded any of the medals in any year.

5.7 All of the medals are awarded against the specific criteria included on the Response to Criteria for Vice-Chancellor’s Medal form.

5.8 The main types of evidence taken into account in assessing nominations are specified on the Response to Criteria for Vice-Chancellor’s Medal form.

5.9 The types of evidence taken into account in assessing nominations are weighted in favour of recognisable outcomes and outputs.

5.10 Selection panels assess nominations and make recommendations for the award of the medals to the Vice-Chancellor and President. The panel for the learning and teaching medals is established through the Learning and Teaching Committee, the research medal panel through the Research Management Committee, the Engagement medal panel through the Regional Engagement Committee, and the Service medal panel through the Senior Staff Forum.

5.11 The Vice-Chancellor and President determines the recipients of the medals.

5.12 Vice-Chancellor’s medals are presented at the University’s graduation ceremony and $5,000 is placed in each recipient’s academic pursuits or professional pursuits account to support their work. In the event that there is more than one winner of any medal the $5,000 will be shared between the winners.

5.13 Award monies must be used for the advancement of work, or work similar to that for which the medal was received. Typically this could include (but is not limited to) strategic travel, conference participation, work-related resources and professional development activities.

5.14 Any equipment purchased with award monies is the property of the University.

5.15 Any award recipient who is no longer employed by the University at the time of the announcement of the awards will be issued with the award, but will not be entitled to award monies.
