University graduates ready for work

More than 500 students from the University of the Sunshine Coast have completed their degrees and are ready to launch their careers.

Exams are over, final assignments have been handed in and it's time to put all that study to good use.

The University has turned out almost 2500 skilled graduates since its first Graduation Ceremony in 1999 and they keep on coming.

Some students have been lucky enough to secure work even before they completed their studies.

People like Margot Lohan, a public relations student, who has been working part-time in Brisbane for the past few months.

Although the challenge of final year study and part-time work kept Margot busy, she is enjoying her job with the Corporate Communications section of one of Australia's fastest growing electricity companies, CS Energy.

As part of her communications degree, Margot completed an internship with Jayne Keogh PR, a fast-paced boutique event and public relations consultancy in Brisbane.

It was the experience and confidence Margot gained during her internship that led to her being offered the position with CS Energy.

Internships play an important part in helping prepare them for success in their careers according to USC Public Relations lecturer Maggie Third.

"We know that the communication industry works at a fast and furious pace," Ms Third said.

"Consequently, we aim to prepare students to 'hit the ground running' with practical skills as well as the ability to analyse what is happening in the broader environment.

"In many cases (internships) have evolved quickly into paid work for the students, even before they finish their degree," Ms Third said.

The University is regularly contacted by employers and Careers and Employment Officer, Ngaere Blair, said it is encouraging that businesses and organisations turn to the University for skilled new staff.

"With a broad range of degrees available and great support services, our students are enhancing their skills and knowledge for today's workplace," Ms Blair said.

The University has students graduating in 2004 with degrees including; Environmental Science, Design and Marketing, Communications, Community Work, Accounting, Public Health, Sports and Exercise Science and many more across the Arts, Business, Science and Social Sciences.

Ms Blair has been pleased with the number of employers registering their job vacancies with her at the University.

"It has been very encouraging to get such a great response from local employers who want to offer a USC graduate a job. Sometimes it may be for a short- term basis, but they are all much needed opportunities for students to gain entry to their careers."

Students value the opportunity of hands-on skill development and can see how their education fits into the world of work.

"There have been many employers who have contacted me saying how pleased they are with the USC graduates they already have working for them, and are willing to offer more students work," Ms Blair said.

Businesses and organisations interested in employing a student or providing an opportunity for them to gain hands-on work experience are encouraged to contact Ngaere Blair on (07) 5430 1226, or via email at nblair@usc.edu.au for more information.

All jobs received are advertised free of charge to USC students.
