Key educators meet on the Sunshine Coast

September 24, 2004 20 August, 2004

Executive Members of the Australian Curriculum Studies Association (ACSA) met at the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) on August 22 and 23.

ACSA, a key curriculum body for educators in Australia, met in the lead up to its biennial conference which will be held on the Sunshine Coast in September 2005.

University of the Sunshine Coast Vice-Chancellor, Professor Paul Thomas, said he was delighted that this important conference would be held at the University next year.

"We are offering three combined degrees in secondary education from the beginning of 2005 and having the ACSA conference here will highlight our exciting work in teacher education," Professor Thomas said.

"ACSA provides a national voice on curriculum matters and is a key influence on national education policy."

Foundation Lecturer in Education at the University of the Sunshine Coast, Dr Jennifer Nayler, is a member of the ACSA Executive.

According to Dr Nayler, who edits the Association's journal, Primary and Middle Years Educator, events such as next year's conference contribute enormously to the educational community on the Sunshine Coast.

Canberra-based ACSA Executive Director, Ms Kathy Schoo, said the meeting was attended by university-based educators, teachers and other educators from a variety of organisations including employing authorities, professional associations and unions.

"ACSA is very excited about the conference being held at the University which has such up-to-date facilities," Ms Schoo said.

"Education Queensland's Information Communications and Technology Centre, which is located on campus, will enable the use of video conferencing and the use of wireless computer connections for visiting educators."

Conference Co-convener and local principal, Ms Lyn Winch said more than four hundred educators from around Australia are expected to attend next year's conference.

"The meeting is an important part of the overall planning for next year's event. It will be a learning opportunity that teachers won't want to miss," Ms Winch said.
