Multicultural families - investing in the nation's future

15 June, 2004

Families, particularly those from diverse cultural backgrounds, are the focus of a two-day conference organised by USC's Centre for Multicultural and Community Development at Caloundra on June 23 and 24.

The Centre for Multicultural and Community Development (CMCD), based at the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC), will present the conference as an opportunity to discuss and debate issues affecting multicultural families.

CMCD Director Narayan Gopalkrishnan said the conference will focus on families from diverse cultural backgrounds and the many challenges facing parents, communities and the government in supporting these families.

"Issues for discussion include parenting and growing up in a diverse society, the impact of migration on families and intergenerational and intercultural issues," Mr Gopalkrishnan said.

"This conference is the first of its kind to be held in Queensland and will have major implications for the way government and service agencies deliver programs to meet the diverse needs of multicultural families," he said.

The conference is aimed at community, social and youth workers, young people, interested community members, researchers, policy makers and academics.

The two-day event will incorporate keynote speakers including the Minister for Child Safety, academics, government officials and community service agencies.
