GO Program offers overseas study opportunities
29 July, 2004
Morayfield local, Rebecca James, has just returned from New Mexico where she spent a semester studying as part of her degree at the University of the Sunshine Coast.
The Bachelor of Arts/Science student studied at the New Mexico State University in the USA.
While in New Mexico Ms James stayed in an apartment on campus and studied communication and public health subjects directly related to her USC degree.
Ms James said the trip was the greatest experience of her life.
"It was the biggest challenge I've ever faced, but it was also the most rewarding," Ms James said.
"I had to be independent and find my own way around, but there was a lot of support when I needed it."
The University of the Sunshine Coast arranged for Ms James to meet people from New Mexico State University before she left to travel overseas.
"I already knew people when I arrived there, which helped," she said.
Ms James also managed to fit in courses in scuba diving and western style horse riding while at New Mexico State University.
The University of the Sunshine Coast GO (Global Opportunities) Program is designed to allow students to spend up to two semesters studying overseas while earning credits toward their degree.
USC has partnerships with more than 40 universities and institutions around the world.
Students can choose to study in Canada, Mexico, Costa Rica, Brazil, USA, Chile, Peru, Japan, Korea, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy or Norway just to name a few.
Ms James enjoyed her overseas study experience so much, she is already planning a semester in Costa Rica where she plans to add Spanish language skills to her already impressive global resume.
