The University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) has announced a range of new courses for 2005.

USC Vice-Chancellor, Professor Paul Thomas, said the new courses have been created to meet specific demands in employment markets.

"The University has identified areas of employment that are experiencing a shortage of qualified staff," Professor Thomas said.

"Professions such as secondary school teaching, health promotion and regional and urban planning.

"Our new combined education programs will produce graduates able to work as secondary school teachers, and this is the first time a full secondary education program has been offered on the Sunshine Coast," he said.

"The four-year course will give graduates a combined Bachelor of Education/Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Arts, or Bachelor of Business, depending on subject choices."

The USC Faculty of Science is offering two new degrees in exercise therapy and health promotion.

"Our Diploma of Fitness/Bachelor of Science (Exercise Therapy) has been developed in conjunction with the Cooloola Sunshine Institute of TAFE and will give graduates career options in fields such as exercise physiology or sports science," Professor Thomas said.

"Health promotion is a growing profession and demand for tertiary qualified practitioners has increased significantly over recent years.

"USC is offering a Bachelor of Health (Health Promotion) in 2005 for people interested in working in a range of areas including government departments, not-for-profit organisations, private industries or international aid agencies promoting healthy activities in the community through public education and the development of health programs."

In 2005, the Faculty of Arts and Social Science will offer students a career in the future development and growth of towns and cities with the Bachelor of Regional and Urban Planning.

"This degree has evolved directly from an identified Australia-wide shortage of qualified planners," Professor Thomas said.

"Being able to offer a regional and urban planning degree with a strong focus on 'regional' in an area like the Sunshine Coast is a real bonus for the University."

"Students studying this course will have access to practical planning experience in one of Australia's fastest growing areas with opportunities to further their study in the USA or Korea, which offer courses complementary to the new degree," he said.

USC Faculty of Business has new degrees in financial planning and human resource management on offer next year.
