‘Tubular Cels’ and 'Planet Earth'
University of the Sunshine Coast Art Gallery
Opens Thursday 6 May, 2004
29 April, 2004
A wave of surf art legends are set to hit the University of the Sunshine Coast Art Gallery with the launch of an exciting new exhibition on Thursday May 6.
A first-of-its-kind project by Sydney's Silicon Pulp Studio, Tubular Cels features works by Australia's surf art legends Reg Mombassa (formerly with '80s band Mental As Anything and designer for Mambo), Gerry Wedd, Mark Sutherland, Steve Cakebread and many others.
They have captured the culture of Australian surfing with original designs, caricature portraits, CD covers, T-shirt designs, cartoons - even a surfboard.
The work of the Sunshine Coast's own Dave Homer will also be on display. His CV reads…
Dave grew up on the Sunshine Coast where he wasted away his school years scribbling on textbooks and spending every spare minute surfing.
He left Queensland in 1999 to pursue a career in graphic design within the music industry and is currently the senior designer for Sony Music in Sydney.
Dave has designed CD-covers for various bands including; Something for Kate, Jebediah, Endorphin and Ben Folds.
Now living in Bondi, he combines three of his greatest passions in life: illustration, music and surfing.
Included in the exhibition will be Planet Earth - a youth project featuring hand-painted surfboards, snowboards and SK8boards.
Both exhibitions will continue until Saturday May 29. The University of the Sunshine Coast 2004 Gallery Exhibition Program is proudly supported by Coastline BMW.
The University of the Sunshine Coast Art Gallery is open from 10am to 4pm weekdays and 1pm to 4pm on Saturday. Closed Sunday and public holidays. Admission is free and the public is welcome.
