Wanted – art lovers
May 12, 2004
The University of the Sunshine Coast Gallery needs your help.
If you have an interest in art and can spare a few hours a fortnight, the University Gallery is looking for volunteers - no experience necessary.
The University Gallery hosts a range of diverse and stimulating exhibitions throughout the academic year.
The semester one 2004 program has included; children's book illustrations, Elizabeth Poole's metamorphosis themed sculptural works, Kurt Brereton's world of the mangroves and currently there is a colourful exhibition of surfing culture and art [opened May 6].USC Gallery volunteer Beverley Potter (left) with Acting Gallery Director Dawn Oelrich.
The semester one program will finish in June with an exhibition of work from computer art and design students and the semester two programs will follow on in July.
The University already has a loyal band of volunteers who assist in the day-to-day running of the gallery, helping to install and demount exhibitions, giving educational talks to visiting school groups and answering questions from the public about the visiting exhibitions.
Volunteers are fully briefed on each new exhibition and training is provided.
Volunteers are invited to exhibition openings, talks by the artists and other Art Gallery events.
They also receive a regular newsletter and have the opportunity to not only make new friends, but also to become an integral part of University campus life.
Volunteers are vital in keeping the Gallery open to the public for free six days a week.
Art Gallery volunteers need to be reliable, friendly and have excellent people skills.
This month the University is moving its art exhibitions into the new Art Gallery, which will be officially opened late July.
If you are a retired art lover and can spare three hours a fortnight between 10am and 1pm or 1pm to 4pm Monday to Saturday, you could be just the person the Gallery is looking for.
