Art and poetry on the move

ARTRANSIT, an exhibition of artwork and poetry cleverly devised to bring art to the masses, will be on display at the University of the Sunshine Coast Gallery from Thursday September 23.
ARTRANSIT presents an exciting, innovative collaboration between art and poetry.
The exhibition includes a wide range of creative work by established and emerging practitioners.
It features posters that combine poems and images by Australian poets and artists including Michael Leunig, Andrew Denton, Les Wicks, Philip Hammial, Pamela Brown, Alan Jefferies, Kurt Brereton, and JoAnne Duggan.
Throughout the 1990s the posters were displayed on buses and ferries in Sydney and Newcastle, engaging commuters with evocative, intriguing and unexpected words and images.
University Gallery Director, Lisa Chandler, said the goal of the series was to bring poetry and art to new audiences.
"It was a highly successful initiative and generated great interest and spontaneous discussion amongst commuters," Ms Chandler said.
"Some travellers even tried to souvenir some of the works, but fortunately we have the whole series on show in the Gallery."
This is the first time ARTRANSIT has been exhibited on the Sunshine Coast as the works are usually held in various permanent collections around the world including the London Transport Museum and the New York Transit Authority Museum.
The exhibition continues until Saturday October23.
The University of the Sunshine Coast 2004 Gallery Exhibition Program is proudly supported by Coastline BMW.
The Gallery is open to the public from 10am - 4pm weekdays and 1 - 4pm on Saturday. Admission is free.
