Gary Crew and Karen Brooks pass on their skills.

Gary Crew and Karen Brooks, both popular authors of novels for children and young adults and who are both University of the Sunshine Coast senior lecturers, will host special workshops for young writers as part of the Voices on the Coast Youth Literature Festival in June.

Held over five days the annual event attracts avid young readers and emerging writers from across the Coast.

Last year the Festival attracted more than 3500 students from 70 schools across the Sunshine Coast and beyond.

Mr Crew, author of more than 50 books and Senior Lecturer in Creative Writing at the University, recently won the Wilderness Society National Environment Award for Children's Literature for his series of three illustrated children's books on extinct species in Australia.

Mr Crew will share his experience and expertise with young writers during a special master class to be held on Thursday June 24.

Dr Karen Brooks is well known on the Sunshine Coast as a writer, speaker and commentator.

Dr Brooks is also a Senior Lecturer in Australian Cultural Studies at the University of the Sunshine Coast and the author of the popular Cassandra Klein fantasy books.

Her special workshops will be held on Wednesday June 23 and Thursday June 24.

Other workshops planned for the Festival focus on writing, illustrating and poetry.
