School students offered a head start on university
20 October, 2004
Please note - due to overwhelming demand, the cut-off date for Headstart applications has been extended to December 3.
Information night being held at University of the Sunshine Coast Wednesday November 3.
Sunshine Coast high school students are being offered the chance to get a head start on their university study.
The University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) Headstart Program gives Year 11 and 12 students the opportunity to study an undergraduate university course while still at high school.
An information evening on the Headstart Program will be run at the University on the evening of Wednesday November 3 and many high school students and their parents are already enquiring about enrolment for 2005 according to USC's Kylie McKenzie.
"Applications for enrolment in the Headstart Program at USC in semester 1, 2005 close on November 26," Ms McKenzie said.
The program gives high school students a taste of university life and helps prepare them for future study.
"Headstart helps high school students make the transition to university. When they start their degree, they already have credits in subjects and are ahead of the rest of the school leavers.
"The study commitment from the students is about 10 hours a week, three to five hours of lectures and tutorials and the rest spent on individual study," she said.
Headstart students attend the same lectures and tutorials as other university students and often end up making good friends at the university, which also helps ease the move from school to university.
Headstart students can select courses offered by the faculties of Arts and Social Sciences (including Languages), Business and Science and individual advice on planning study progression is available.
Another benefit of Headstart is that it provides guaranteed entry into the University of the Sunshine Coast if the student successfully completes two courses with the program.
Information about the Headstart Program is available on the schools page of this website under "Community".
The information evening is free and high school students and their parents are invited to attend.
Current Headstart students and university staff will be on hand to answer questions.
Bookings are essential, to reserve a seat on November 3 or to find out more about the Headstart Program call (07) 5430 1117.
