Productive Ageing National Spotlight Focuses on the Sunshine Coast

'Mature Age Employment: From Redundancy to Resurrection'

8 June, 2004

The National Seniors Productive Ageing Centre (NSPAC) based at the University of the Sunshine Coast will host an important and topical forum on mature age employment at the University on June 25.

NSPAC Director, Professor Leon Earle, strongly urges local community workers, government representatives, business people, recruitment agencies and anyone in the community interested in mature age employment and productive ageing to attend.

Professor Earle will present research findings from the mature age employment study, titled: From Redundancy to Resurrection.

"With the ageing population on the Coast growing rapidly each week, the need to address the problems of productive ageing and mature aged employment needs to be addressed now," Professor Earle said.

"Research findings and the implications of those findings for local and national planning will be presented at the forum."

"Findings include a very high number of people who are relocating to the Sunshine and Gold Coasts areas."

"This influx of older people is having a two-fold effect. Firstly, those people are leaving their work and families and secondly, they have to adjust to a new area and make serious decisions on what work they can do and how they can do it," he said.

The ageing population will also have a marked effect on the way businesses market their products in the future.

"I encourage local business people to attend this forum as we will be addressing the future of marketing to this growing group and the need to identify relevant products suitable for them," he said.

The forum will run from 1pm to 3pm on Friday June 25 and will feature a panel discussion on mature age employment issues.

The speakers/panel members include:

Professor Leon Earle - Director, NSPAC
Mr Everald Compton - Honorary Fellow USC and Chair of the National Seniors Productive Ageing Centre board of Directors
Honourable Mal Brough MP - Minister for Employment Services
Professor Deborah Ralston - Dean, Faculty of Business, USC
Dr Ernest Bennett - Past President U3A Sunshine Coast
