Port Folio showcases a new generation of designers
8 November, 2004
Port Folio, a dynamic exhibition of art by students from the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) will be launched at 5.30pm on Thursday November18 at the University Gallery, Sippy Downs Drive, Sippy Downs.
Showcasing the work of graduating and advanced level Art and Design students, the evening will begin with an interactive presentation featuring student projects that transform the written word into new media.
Keynote speaker, Nicholas Reynolds, from Portfolio Design Brisbane will officially open the exhibition at 6.00pm.
The University of the Sunshine Coast recognises that today's graphic designers need a combination of skill, composition and artistry balanced with a high level of technological nous and the University aims to ensure graduates have these skills.
This approach is proving successful for the University with students in high demand even before they have graduated and many completing work for clients in both business and the community while still studying.
A prize will be presented at the opening of the exhibition by Noosa Nature Tours, for the most successful project that developed a local identity and met a strict company design brief.
It is involvement from local businesses such as this that provides students with opportunities to work on actual projects for clients according to USC Art and Design lecturer Debbie Livingston.
"The client wanted some exciting new ideas and approached the University seeking student input," Ms Livingston said
"The students were able to apply their knowledge to a 'real life' situation that enabled them to demonstrate their creative skills."
Port Folio will show a range of other creative projects that are the culmination of the student work's in readiness for their entry into the workplace.
The exhibition is the University's chance to show off their best student work according to Gallery Director Lisa Chandler.
"It's an exciting and interactive exhibition which presents a new generation of local design talent," Ms Chandler said.
"It's a great opportunity to see some of the outstanding work being created by advanced level students.
"Anyone interested in studying Art and Design at the University can see the type of projects students are involved in, while potential employers can see the high standard of work created by these emerging designers," she said.
The exhibition features large-scale digital prints, graphic design, web sites, videos and interactive CD roms.
"The exhibition will have broad appeal because it includes individual creative works as well as applied design," Ms Chandler said.
Port Folio will continue until November 26.
Admission is free and the public is welcome.
