The University of the Sunshine Coast has launched its 2005 Orientation Week with an Official Welcome Session held this morning.

More than 900 new students attended the session where the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Paul Thomas, officially welcomed them to the University.

Other speakers advised them on a variety of ways they can ensure they start their university career on the right foot.

In total 1558* new students will start at USC this semester, an increase of more than 100 from last year.

The majority of new students are women, with 1015 females enrolled compared to 543 males.

Fifty-three per cent of new students are the first in their families to attend university, which shows that local people are taking advantage of having USC here on the Coast.

The majority of new students are from the Sunshine Coast (1028) with 529 of those from the Maroochy Shire, 243 from Caloundra Shire and 124 from the Noosa Shire.

Brisbane students totalled 164 and 27 new students have come from the Wide Bay area.

Thirty-seven new students are from NSW and 18 have moved up from Victoria.

Two hundred and sixteen International Students have enrolled at USC from 17 different countries.

Most of our international students come from the USA (115), followed by Germany with 34 and Japan with 11.

Most popular USC courses include Bachelor of Science (Sport and Exercise), the new Bachelor of Education Arts, Science or Business, Bachelor of Business (Accounting) and the Bachelor of Arts (Communication).

Activities and academic sessions will continue throughout the week.

* This figure may increase as applications are still being accepted up until February 17.
