O-Week kicks off at USC

The University of the Sunshine Coast has launched its 2005
Orientation Week with an Official Welcome Session held this
morning.
More than 900 new students attended the session where the
Vice-Chancellor, Professor Paul Thomas, officially welcomed them to
the University.
Other speakers advised them on a variety of ways they can ensure
they start their university career on the right foot.
In total 1558* new students will start at USC this semester, an
increase of more than 100 from last year.
The majority of new students are women, with 1015 females
enrolled compared to 543 males.
Fifty-three per cent of new students are the first in their
families to attend university, which shows that local people are
taking advantage of having USC here on the Coast.
The majority of new students are from the Sunshine Coast (1028)
with 529 of those from the Maroochy Shire, 243 from Caloundra Shire
and 124 from the Noosa Shire.
Brisbane students totalled 164 and 27 new students have come
from the Wide Bay area.
Thirty-seven new students are from NSW and 18 have moved up from
Victoria.
Two hundred and sixteen International Students have enrolled at
USC from 17 different countries.
Most of our international students come from the USA (115),
followed by Germany with 34 and Japan with 11.
Most popular USC courses include Bachelor of Science (Sport and
Exercise), the new Bachelor of Education Arts, Science or Business,
Bachelor of Business (Accounting) and the Bachelor of Arts
(Communication).
Activities and academic sessions will continue throughout the
week.
