ASQ Take Flight at USC
1 July, 2005
One of Australia's leading chamber ensembles, the Australian String Quartet (ASQ), will perform at the University on 3 August as part of their 2005 'Take Flight' Concert Series.
The Sunshine Coast concert is mid-way through their 2005 Australian tour and is the only performance outside a capital city on the eastern seaboard.
University Foundation Director, Andrew Pentland said the annual concert tour, now in its fourth year at USC is a prestigious calendar event for music lovers on the Coast.
"The Australian String Quartet is extremely popular and bringing them to the Sunshine Coast for the past four years has been a major coup for the University," Mr Pentland said.
"The Take Flight concert series is set to be a sell out around Australia."
"Proceeds from the evening will go toward supporting the University Art Gallery," Mr Pentland said.
This year, the performance will include a special guest appearance by Li-Wei Qin, a gifted cellist, who has been described as a 'superstar of the cello' whose work has received international acclaim.
Mr Qin was born in Shanghai and moved to Australia in 1976, he is now based in London and plays a 1720 Giuseppe Guarneri cello on loan from the Australian Council.
During the 'Take Flight' performance (Concert 3) at the USC Innovation Centre, the popular string quartet will play; Webern Six Bagatelles, Opus 9 (1924), Haydn 'Lark' String Quartet in D Major, Opus 64 No. 5 (1790) and Schubert's Quintet in C (1828) featuring Li-Wei.
Tickets cost $30, 6.30pm arrival for 7pm concert.
