USC conference confronts racism

The conference - Racism in the New World Order: Realities of Culture, Colour and Identity - will be held on 8 and 9 December at the Hyatt Regency Coolum.
Organised by the Centre for Multicultural and Community Development (CMCD) at the University of the Sunshine Coast, the conference as arisen from concerns about increasing levels of racism in light of international events, and will examine manifestations of racism in Australia and around the world.
International keynote speakers include:
- Professor Floya Anthias,
Professor of Sociology, Oxford Brookes University, UK
- Ms Laila Al-Qatami,
Communications Director, American-Arab Anti Discrimination Committee USA.
Representatives from community, government and other organisations as well as academics from around the world will attend the conference to develop a better understanding of racism and strategies of how to combat it.
The conference is sponsored by state and local governments.
The two-day conference aims to share experiences of racism in a global context and identify ways to combat it and increase community awareness of issues through strategies and education.
The conference organisers will also present examples of 'best practice' and innovative programs as part of their overall strategy of creating an impetus of change and placing racism issues firmly in the public arena.
