University of the Sunshine Coast Senior Lecturer in Marine Science, Dr Thomas Schlacher, has been appointed to the editorial board of the prestigious international journal Marine Ecology.

Marine Ecology publishes cutting-edge articles by marine scientists from around the world and the editorial board sets the strategic direction of the journal, its content and the quality of the papers published.

The board are also tasked with identifying 'hot topics' in marine science and encouraging innovative research papers and novel applications of scientific methods.

USC Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Greg Hill, congratulated Dr Schlacher on his appointment.

"Appointment to the editorial board of an international journal is a great honour," Professor Hill said.

"Members are chosen for their international standing and expertise. It indicates that experts in the discipline area recognise Dr Schlacher as being a leader in his field on the international stage," he said.

Dr Schlacher, who has studied in Salzburg, Vienna and South Africa, teaches the subjects of Introductory Oceanography, Marine Ecology, and Coastal Ecology and Conservation at USC.

His research is wide-ranging and has included the estuaries on the Sunshine Coast and in South Africa, the ecology and human impact on sandy beaches along our coast and in the North Atlantic, and deep-sea volcanoes in the South Pacific.
