Food Science and Nutrition - a growing industry
26 October, 2005
A specialised degree and qualifications in one of Australia's fastest growing business sectors - the University of the Sunshine Coast will offer a Bachelor of Food Science and Nutrition in 2006.
The degree has been created in response to a developing industry on the Sunshine Coast according to program coordinator and senior lecturer in Nutritional Biochemistry at USC, Dr Mark Holmes.
"Opportunities exist in areas such as new food development, food inspection and safety, and food testing," Dr Holmes said.
The food and beverage industry is one of the fastest growing sectors in Australia and graduates from the Food Science and Nutrition degree can look forward to enjoying good employment prospects.
"Students gain a sound understanding of food science and nutrition through studying food biochemistry, food microbiology, food regulations and safety, and fermentation technology," he said.
Developing new foods and finding answers to the growing number of food allergies in the community are also part of specialisation areas within the degree.
"Students can concentrate their study in areas of particular interest to them such as dietary supplements, probiotics and nutraceuticals; nutrition support for people with chronic diseases; and sustainable food production.
"They will also be able to combine their science studies with subjects in marketing or business management, public health or sports science for a fully-rounded degree with great potential for employment," Dr Holmes said.
