University offers Headstart to study
11 March, 2005
The University of the Sunshine Coast is offering its popular Headstart Program again in Semester 2 and will hold a special program information evening on Wednesday March 16.
The Headstart Program offers Year 11 and 12 high school students the chance to begin university study while still at school giving them a head start on other school leavers.
The program is highly competitive with places limited to only 60 students each semester.
High school students from across the Sunshine Coast can apply and the information evening will provide both students and their parents with information on the application process and criteria for selection.
Entry to the program is based on academic and personal achievements, and results show that 36 per cent of Headstart students receive grades of Distinction or High Distinction during their time at USC.
QTAC (Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre) application statistics show that 90 per cent of the University's Headstart students in 2004 went on to apply for a place at university.
"This is significant, as the primary reason of the program is to aid students' transition to, and uptake of, university study," USC External Relations Officer, Kylie McKenzie said.
"Parents and teachers have commented on the improved confidence and maturity of Headstart students since participating in the program, with some students significantly improving their academic results at high school as a result of their participation in the program."
Year 9 and 10 students who are interested in applying for the program in the future are also encouraged to attend.
Ms McKenzie will be on hand to answer questions about the program and guests will be able to meet current Headstart students and University staff.
"The Headstart Program is designed to create a seamless transition from school to university," Ms McKenzie said.
"It allows Year 11 and 12 students to complete accredited undergraduate university courses while still at school, effectively shortening the time they spend at university after high school."
More schools than ever are participating in Headstart this semester, with 14 high schools between Caboolture and Gympie taking part in the program.
The Headstart information evening is part of the University's Keep Pace Program - helping the community keep pace with education.
