Students receive Hessen scholarships

1 June 2005

Six undergraduate students are preparing to travel to Germany after receiving scholarships from the state of Hessen, a Queensland sister state.

The students will take part in International Summer University (ISU) programs in Fulda, Frankfurt, Kassel and Marburg and five of them will remain in Europe to spend a full semester studying overseas as part of their USC degrees.

The six students, from across the three faculties of Business, Arts and Social Sciences and Science, Health and Education will attend seminars and German language courses as part of their four-week ISU study trip.

They will also add valuable global experience to their degrees according to Liani Eckard, GO (Global Opportunities) Program Coordinator.

"Each year the Hessen Ministry offers scholarships worth A$4000 each to Queensland students to participate in International Summer Universities in Hessen," Ms Eckard said.

"Only 14 student scholarships were offered by the Hessen Ministry this year and USC was one of only two Queensland universities to receive them, so this is a great achievement for us."

"The scholarships are a wonderful opportunity for students to learn about other cultures and broaden both their life and learning experiences," she said.

Scholarships for the ISU's include participation in the seminar programs as well as accommodation, breakfast and excursions.

"The University of the Sunshine Coast also provides students with travel grants of up to A$2000 to assist with air fares," Ms Eckard said.

USC has partnerships with more than 60 universities and institutions around the world.

USC encourages students to add an international experience to their degree and the GO Program allows them to do this.

The GO Program assists students to travel overseas by linking them with partner institutes and international support services in overseas universities.

The University also offers a number of Overseas Study Grants to help students offset the cost of air travel.

A limited number of Overseas Study Grants are provided each semester to students participating in the GO Program to selected partner institutions.

The Overseas Study Grants are worth up to A$2000 each towards a return economy airfare.
