Intensive language learning at USC
22 April, 2005
A unique collaboration between the University of the Sunshine
Coast, local high schools, international USC students, University
staff and the community gave more than 100 local high school
students an opportunity to enhance their language skills.
The Intensive Language Day, held at the University, brought
together Year 11 and 12 students who are studying Japanese and
Indonesian, USC staff and students, and native speakers from the
community in a day of intense language learning.
School students from Bribie Island to Coolum took part in the
day, which was coordinated by USC's Languages Project Officer,
Elizabeth Henzell.
"The students had a unique opportunity to practice their
language skills in conversation with native speakers, and were also
able to learn about life and cultural experiences of living in
Japan and Indonesia," Ms Henzell said.
"This gave students an opportunity to speak with and listen to
native speakers of their target language, something that students
of Languages Other Than English seldom ever have an opportunity to
do here in Australia," she said.
The expertise of USC staff and students was tapped too.
Japanese students who are currently studying at USC worked with
the visiting school students along with USC Japanese and Indonesian
language tutors.
