Keeping it in the family

1 April, 2005

Tewantin-based mother and son, Leanne and Adam Gill, are taking full advantage of having university education available right here on the Sunshine Coast.

Mrs Gill graduated with a Bachelor of Business (Accounting) from the University on March 31 and son Adam is in his second year of a Diploma of Sport and Recreation with Honours and Bachelor of Business.

Mrs Gill is employed as an accountant with local Tewantin accounting firm, Holmans.

The University's accounting program is proving popular with employers, with 100 per cent of graduates employed in the accounting profession.

Faculty of Business Dean, Professor Deborah Ralston, said it was pleasing to see graduates going on to find quality work, especially within the region.

"The aim of our degree programs at USC is to meet both industry standards and provide good career prospects for graduates," Professor Ralston said.

"While many of our students work in Brisbane or interstate on graduation, it is great to hear of our Business graduates finding professional work in their local area.Image of Accounting graduate Leanne Gill

"Accounting is a profession that offers graduates a range of career choices.

"Whether it is within business management, taxation specialisation or starting their own accounting business, graduates are finding the course fits their career aspirations," Professor Ralston said.

Ms Gill choose the accounting degree to advance her career and offers the following advice to anyone considering returning to study as a mature age student.

"Have faith - you can do it!."

Ms Gill was attracted to the position at Holmans because of their proactive stance on training and credits work experience during her degree and the support of University staff as helping in her success.

"USC is local, small, dynamic and age is no barrier to studying there," she said.

Ms Gill's son, Adam, has followed in his mother's footsteps and is in his second year of study at USC.
