Graduate studies in Health Promotion
16 November, 2005
UPDATE: Application deadline extended to 3 February, 2006.
Everyone has heard the old adage that prevention is better than cure. Recognition of the need to maintain and promote good health, rather than wait until illness or injury appear, has never been greater.
Governments, organisations and communities around the world are increasingly recognising the importance of employing people with qualifications in health promotion to enable them to help keep people healthy and well.
In response to this need, the University of the Sunshine Coast is offering a range of postgraduate courses in Health Promotion from 2006.
The USC Graduate Health Promotion programs are:
· Graduate Certificate in Health Promotion (four courses)
· Graduate Diploma in Health Promotion (eight courses)
· Master of Health Promotion (twelve courses, including a research project)
The Graduate Health Promotion Programs, offered through the Faculty of Science, Health and Education, respond to the increasing demand for professionals equipped with the skills to address the complex social, economic and environmental issues impacting on people's health and wellbeing.
Job opportunities in health promotion are available in government, non-government, private sector companies, community-based organisations and international agencies. Health promotion practitioners work as health promotion officers, program managers, disease prevention coordinators, policy advisors, researchers, program evaluators, and health educators.
Health promotion attracts people from a broad range of backgrounds such as education, nursing, medicine, oral health, mental health, sexual health, complementary medicine, community work, planning, youth work, indigenous health and welfare, aged care, communication and environmental studies.
University graduates who already hold a degree in another field and are interested in furthering their understanding of health promotion or expanding their career opportunities now have the option to undertake a Graduate Program.
The Graduate Programs are also available to people who are not university graduates, but may have extensive relevant industry experience, providing them with an opportunity to formalise their experience into an internationally recognised qualification from a higher education institution.
Opportunities exist for students to further their experience by becoming involved in ongoing University-based and community health promotion programs.
All Programs are available on a part-time basis, and the Master of Health Promotion is also available full-time. All courses are delivered on campus over 13 week semesters, with some courses being offered intensively in four day blocks, subject to enrolment numbers.
The Graduate Programs extend the university's offerings in health promotion beyond the successful undergraduate Bachelor of Health (Health Promotion) and Bachelor of Science (Public Health) programs.
All USC Health Promotion Programs are based on a socio-ecological model of health and explore contemporary health promotion at individual, group, organisation, community and population levels.
Graduates are eligible to apply for membership with the Australian Health Promotion Association, the Public Health Association of Australia and the International Union for Health Promotion and Education.
