2006 Australian of the Year inspires USC students

Professor Ian Frazer, 2006 Australian of the Year

8 August 2006

The 2006 Australian of the Year, Professor Ian Frazer delivered a lecture entitled The Exploration of Possibilities for Better Decisions (Real Player) * to students at the University of the Sunshine Coast today.

Professor Frazer drew on his varied personal experiences, offering valuable insight to students studying their core course, Innovation, Creativity and Entrepreneurship.

After emigrating from Edinburgh, Scotland to Melbourne in 1980, and then moving to Queensland in 1985, Professor Frazer developed vaccines to prevent and treat cervical cancer, a medical condition affecting 500,000 women each year.

It was Professor Frazer’s vaccine for cervical cancer that put Queensland on the map for ground-breaking medical achievements.

Lecturer Susan Hughes-Lucas said, “At USC, we strive to introduce influential Australian professionals to our students, to give a true understanding of the hard work involved and dedication needed to achieve goals in life.

“The life experiences these guest lecturers bring to the learning environment is instrumental in developing the quality graduates that the University aims to place in the local community.”

At the evening lecturer, Professor Frazer offered advice on how to become a driver, rather than an observer, of innovation: a philosophy that he has lived by for more than 20 years, in his endeavour to cure cervical cancer.

* For the presentation you must have Real Player application, which can be downloaded from the Real Player page. The video streaming of Professor Frazer's online presentation may take a while to connect and will require a high-speed broadband connection.
