Success for USC at Northern University Games
7 July, 2006
University of the Sunshine Coast students have celebrated their
best-ever campaign at the Northern University Games, winning medals
in a number of finals played on the Coast yesterday.
USC won gold in both the men's squash and open ten pin bowling,
silver in the women's water polo and bronze in the men's
volleyball.
USC teams placed fourth in no less than six other finals matches
during the hotly-contested week-long sporting event.
These successes resulted in the University placing third overall
from a field of 13 universities from Queensland, the Northern
Territory and northern New South Wales.
USC Team Manager Barry Heath was ecstatic with the result.
"It is great to get gold, especially on home turf. I think the
support of the home crowd has really helped," said Mr Heath.
This is the first time the Northern University Games have been
hosted on the Sunshine Coast, and the first time that USC has been
the official university partner.
Vice-Chancellor, Professor Paul Thomas, and Mayor of Maroochy,
Councillor Joe Natoli, were on hand to present the winning pennants
and trophies at the closing ceremony held yesterday afternoon at
the Caloundra Indoor Sports Stadium.
