Coast principals meet on campus
11 August 2006
Principals from across the region will converge on the University of the Sunshine Coast this Monday to learn more about its new programs, facilities and school initiatives.
“This breakfast is part of our ongoing commitment to work closely with the schools in the region and to keep our partners in education informed of developments at USC,” Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Greg Hill said.
“The allocation of 235 additional first-year HECS places to our University for 2007 provides an excellent opportunity for students looking to engage in tertiary education and for us to expand into new areas of study which we will reveal at the breakfast.”
The event will offer a preview of more than 30 new degrees being introduced in 2007, which were developed to address skills shortages in the market and to generate graduate employment.
The 22 heads of school attending will also have the opportunity to view the University’s new nursing facilities, which were completed this month at a cost of $12 million. Building H houses two advanced computer labs, two wet labs, a motion lab with an indoor athletics track, a sports lab and two nursing labs with state-of-the-art equipment.
The event will also showcase the success of the existing USC programs which encourage local school students to experience life on campus, including the successful Headstart program and Schools Grants Scheme.
Headstart prepares Year 11 and 12 students for University and offers them a pathway for entry into their chosen program. The initiative was started in 2003 and 391 students from 25 schools have participated to date with very positive results.
The Schools Grants Scheme supports student activities and more than $10,000 was awarded to seven successful schools in 2006.
The event commences at 7am on Monday morning at the Function Hall (Science Building) and includes addresses by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Paul Thomas, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Greg Hill and the Deans of the three faculties.
