A century of Chinese prints on display

15 March, 2006

Image of Artwork: Li Shuquin, Spring Returns, woodprint, 1962. Sunshine Coast residents have a rare and wonderful opportunity to see an exhibition of 100 years of Chinese printmaking at the University Art Gallery.

The exhibition, Selected Chinese Prints from the 20th Century: 1900 - 1999, will be officially opened by the Mayor of Maroochy Shire, Councillor Joe Natoli, at the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) Gallery on Thursday March 30 at 6pm.

Presented by the Ministry of Culture of the People's Republic of China, the exhibition comes to the University through Maroochy Shire's Sister City Program.

"The exhibition of 100 woodblock prints, screen prints, lithographs, copper plates and etchings will take visitors through 100 years of printmaking in China and actually celebrates more than a thousand year history of the art form," Dawn Oelrich, Gallery Curator said.

"We are very fortunate to have this exhibition from China as it shows both traditional printmaking and the 'new printing' introduced in 1931 by Lu Xun.

"The new print differs not only in technique but also in artistic ideals and social implication," Ms Oelrich said.

"The exhibition has been touring the world since 2001 and has been in Australia for the past year and we are very excited to host it at the University Gallery.

"The visual language of art goes beyond the barriers of spoken language and what better way to connect with the people of China."

The artworks will present a beautiful and haunting exhibition of maturity and purity.

"This is a very special exhibition," Ms Oelrich said.

The exhibition will continue until Saturday April 29.

The University of the Sunshine Coast Gallery, located at the University campus on Sippy Downs Drive, Sippy Downs, is open to the public from 10am to 4pm Monday to Friday and Saturday from 1pm to 4pm.

The Gallery is closed Sundays and public holidays.

The 2006 USC Gallery Exhibition Program is proudly supported by Coastline BMW.
