With the first round of university offers for 2006 set to be released on Thursday of this week, the University of the Sunshine Coast has welcomed news of an additional 40 places - 20 each for Education and Nursing.

The 40 first year places will increase to over 100 as students progress through the three year degrees.

Degrees in Education and Nursing are popular with students and both enjoy excellent employment success said Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Greg Hill.

"Both Nursing and Education are considered to be 'national priorities' by the Federal Government and as such funding from the Commonwealth to universities has been increased while students HECS contributions have been set at the lowest level," Professor Hill said.

"These 40 extra places are additional to the already record number of new places made available at the University last year."

"Up to 30 per cent more people chose USC as their first preference for university study in 2006 than in 2005," Professor Hill said.

"The University is gaining in popularity and reputation. Nation-wide there has been either a downturn or a status quo on the number of applications for 2006, but here we have seen the highest growth in applications for any public university in Queensland.

"We are expecting that the number of offers made this week will be a significant increase on last year.

"Despite this, we welcome these additional places, particularly in the areas of Education and Nursing, both of which are new degree programs for USC. They also represent high employment rates for our graduates.

It is not too late to apply to begin university study in February. Applications can still be made through QTAC (Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre) at www.qtac.edu.au or contact (07) 3368 1166.

The University offers a Bachelor of Education combined with either a Bachelor of Arts, Science or Business and the Faculty of Science, Health and Education also offers a Bachelor of Nursing.
