University of the Sunshine Coast recognised for quality

The University of the Sunshine Coast is a five-star performer according to the recently released edition of the Good Universities Guide 2007.

The University has been awarded a five-star rating in major teaching areas such as teaching quality, generic skills, overall graduate satisfaction, academic services and electronic support.

Vice-Chancellor Paul Thomas believes this very satisfactory outcome is a direct result of the strategic focus of the University.

“I am particularly delighted with this excellent result”, he said. “The need for quality education was the driving force behind the establishment of the University of the Sunshine Coast in 1996. This year the University is celebrating its ten-year anniversary and our aim throughout the past ten years has been to provide quality education to people on the Coast. Quality education will ensure the region continues to grow and evolve.

“Fifty-three percent of our students are the first in their family to attend university. The kinds of strategies we’ve employed to assist these students include the provision of a suite of enabling courses in areas such as Mathematics and Science. I believe it is this kind of development which has led to five-star ratings.”

The University has also received an excellent rating for staff qualifications (four stars) and a very satisfactory improvement in job outcomes (five stars).

Student support for the University is strong. In 2006, student first preference applications through the Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC) grew by 30.8 percent.
