2005 biggest year yet for USC Gallery
11 January, 2006
More than ten thousand people passed through the doors of the University of the Sunshine Coast Art Gallery in 2005, making it their biggest year yet.
The 2005 exhibition program including; the Jacaranda Drawing Awards, a look at Baby Boomers, unpacked treasures from the Museum of Contemporary Arts in Sydney, exhibitions by USC students, an International Sculpture Symposium and the popular - Coodabin/Shoodabin - Scenes of Coolum - guaranteed a busy year for Gallery Curator Dawn Oelrich and her team of volunteers.
"Numbers were up almost 30 per cent on 2004 with 10,361 people visiting the Gallery throughout the exhibitions," Ms Oelrich said.
"We moved to the new Gallery on campus in July 2004, built with funds from the community and Friends of the University, and each year we are attracting more and more people, artists and exhibitions to the Gallery.
"In 2005 most of the people through our doors were visitors, followed by school groups and university staff and students.
"A team of generous volunteers help run the Gallery, allowing it to open for free to the public. We are really grateful to their support throughout 2005."
The University Gallery officially launches its 2006 program tonight with two exhibitions by USC staff members. Organic Simulcast and Green Man Resurrected look at the relationships between humans and the environment.
"The exhibition aims to evoke an awareness about nature and human encroachment," Ms Oelrich said.
The University of the Sunshine Coast Gallery, located at the University campus on Sippy Downs Drive, Sippy Downs, is open to the public from 10am to 4pm Monday to Friday and Saturday from 1pm to 4pm. The Gallery is closed Sundays and public holidays.
