A special financial support information session will be held at the University on the evening of January 24. Further information and booking details.

The University of the Sunshine Coast has more than A$1 million in scholarships, bursaries and prizes on offer in 2006.

You don't necessarily need to be a high-achiever to be eligible to apply.

Many other factors are taken into consideration, such as financial hardship or whether you've had to relocate to study according to USC Scholarships Officer Kathryn Hughes.

"People attending the information session can find out how to apply for scholarships and bursaries and get some advice from current students about how to survive on a student budget," Ms Hughes said.

"Many of the financial support programs specifically target new students and school leavers.

"Centrelink representatives will also be available to provide information about financial support and benefits for students including Youth Allowance and Austudy.

"Hundreds of students starting at USC in 2006 will receive financial assistance through these programs to help them begin their university life and ease the costs.

"Each scholarship, bursary and prize has its own specific criteria for application covering a range of different areas relating to university study.

"From academic excellence to demonstrated financial need, scholarships, bursaries and prizes can significantly help students succeed in their university studies," she said.

Depending on student's needs - whether accommodation expenses or text book allowances - even where students went to high school or currently reside, all are relevant application criteria for one of the hundreds of financial support programs available at USC in 2006.

"In the majority of cases, assistance is targeted towards people who need the money to help them stay at university and complete their studies," Ms Hughes said.

Applications for some scholarships and financial assistance schemes begin closing on January 27.

Anyone commencing study at USC this year, including mature age students, school leavers and parents are invited to attend the free session on the evening of January 24.
