USC students help raise breast cancer awareness

USC business students will team up with a local group of breast cancer survivors to help raise money and increase awareness about breast cancer.

As part of their studies at USC, business students can join the 'Students In Free Enterprise' (SIFE) program (further information below) and have the opportunity to put their knowledge into practice by teaching community groups essential business skills, which assist them in the day-to-day running of their business.

Community groups receive advice and support with business development and the students gain valuable experience in dealing with clients, business planning and improved ways of communicating their ideas and strategies.

This year, SIFE students will work with Dragon's Abreast, a group of breast cancer survivors who have an interest in fun and challenging activities, whose main focus is promoting breast cancer awareness.

The students will assist Dragon's Abreast in achieving their business goals by teaching them business skills including introduction to marketing and how to write business and marketing plans.

Additionally, SIFE students will help the Dragon's Abreast group raise awareness in the community about breast cancer.

Dragon's Abreast are part of the Breast Cancer Network in Australia, which is the national voice of Australians affected personally by breast cancer.

The national body - Dragon's Abreast Australia - have planning well underway for the Dragon Boat Regatta (Abreast in Australia 2007), to be held at Caloundra and Kawana Lake on September 28-30, 2007.

Approximately 2000 Australian and international paddlers are expected to be part of the event.

SIFE at USC - past achievements
Former University of the Sunshine Coast business student, Brenton Tickner, was one of only five Australian representatives to travel to Toronto, Canada, to take part in an international HSBC Financial Literacy Forum and the 2005 SIFE World Cup.

Mr Tickner, who completed a Bachelor of Business (Management/Marketing) in June 2005, is now working as Marketing Coordinator - Strategy at the Hyatt Regency Coolum after completing work experience there arranged by the University.

Last year, the USC SIFE team, lead by Mr Tickner, travelled to Sydney to compete in the SIFE Australian National Competition. After winning second runners up in the Cadbury Schweppes division, Mr Tickner was invited to attend the HSBC Financial Literacy Forum in October, followed by the 2005 SIFE World Cup also held in Toronto.

More than 1000 people attended the World Cup and business executives from 30 countries, including some of the world's top CEOs, judged the competition.

One hundred universities from 27 countries were selected to attend the day-long Financial Literacy Forum.

Mr Tickner, a Bli Bli local, took part in round table discussions with other university students from around the world about his team's entry in the competition and had the opportunity to hear a range of international business speakers.
