Australian Story presenter to receive honorary doctorate
ABC’s Australian Story presenter Caroline Jones AO is to receive the University of the Sunshine Coast’s first honorary Doctorate of Letters at USC’s graduation ceremony on Friday 18 May.
The award is in recognition of Caroline’s contribution to Australian broadcasting and journalism as a producer, director and reporter for film, radio and television since 1963.
Caroline has been the face of the award-winning ABC current affairs program, Australian Story, since it started in 1996, and is one of Australia's most respected broadcasters and communicators.
Her career began when she joined the ABC in Canberra in 1963. She became the first woman reporter for This Day Tonight program, after which she presented the national current affairs program, Four Corners, with a weekly audience of two million viewers.
From 1977 to 1981 she presented ABC Radio public affairs program, City Extra, on Sydney's 2BL and also produced and directed a number of documentaries for film and radio.
At the USC graduation ceremony, Caroline also will deliver the Graduation Address.
“I think it’s an honour to be recognised by the University for my 45 years of broadcasting and writing, and it means a lot to me,” she said.
“I’m really looking forward to visiting the University. I think the whole experience will be very exciting.”
The graduation ceremony will be among the largest held in Queensland with about 500 graduands planning to attend.
For the first time, the annual ceremony will be video-streamed live on the internet from the University of the Sunshine Coast website at <www.usc.edu.au>.
