USC to offer 3D Design program in 2008
The University of the Sunshine Coast will introduce a cutting-edge Bachelor of Design degree in 2008 which includes an Australian first – a specialisation in the topical area of 3D Design.
This highly-specialised discipline will give students the ability to design for sustainability, as well as functionality, using state-of-the-art technology.
USC’s Head of School of Communication Dr Stephen Lamble said sustainability was bound to become an increasingly important factor in product design.
“Historically, products were designed purely to maximise their functionality,” he said.
“The 3D Design major will explore what happens to products at the end of their lifespan and how they can be taken apart and recycled to minimise their impact on the environment.
“This can be applied to all products from cars to furniture to food packaging and mobile phones.
“The technology to support this new field in design is cutting-edge, with 3D printing converting virtual designs into physical objects which allows for rapid prototyping.”
The Bachelor of Design will ensure students keep abreast of the latest design techniques and, other than 3D Design, also will offer students the opportunity to specialise in Graphic Design or e-Media.
The Graphic Design major will predominantly focus on print-related design with some overlap into web design and advertising.
The e-Media major will explore electronic design techniques and computer-based applications, including website design and multi-media streaming.
The degree will continue to develop as new technologies emerge and additional streams, such as digital photography, are introduced.
