Enterprise Tuesday program to inspire entrepreneurs

Alison Dique with Donna Sheehy of Pedogenesis Pty Ltd

19 July 2007

Entrepreneurs will reveal the secrets of their success at a new business networking event program called “Enterprise Tuesday” starting at the University of the Sunshine Coast’s Innovation Centre on  Tuesday 24 July.

Enterprise Tuesday will be a free program of four evening events open to the local business community and to staff and students of the University and other regional education institutes.

The events will be held at 4pm on 24 July, 14 August, 11 September and 9 October. Each event will include a presentation by a successful entrepreneur and the opportunity to network and meet new people.

USC Innovation Centre’s Student Enterprise Manager Alison Dique said Enterprise Tuesday had been inspired by a program of the same name at the University of Cambridge in England.

Ms Dique said the monthly events would encourage students who wanted to start their own businesses and those who wanted to be innovative in their chosen careers.

The first event will feature 2005 PricewaterhouseCoopers Business Innovation award winner Donna Sheehy, who will speak about motivation. Donna will outline how she established a regionally-based geology business with no formal business qualifications.

The second event will be a “Recognising Opportunities” presentation by Leigh Hemming, co-founder of Didgeridoonas, the Caloundra business that is taking on world markets with its innovative oilskin, leather and woollen products.

The final two events will be on “Increasing the odds – maximizing your chances of success” and “Understanding your customers’ needs – the first time around”.

Ms Dique said she was confident the Enterprise Tuesday concept would work well on the Sunshine Coast after seeing it first-hand at the University of Cambridge in February.

“I am sure that the Enterprise Tuesday program will be an excellent vehicle for students and business people to mix and to learn more about how to start and run a successful business,” she said.

“Starting a business isn’t easy. But more and more USC students and graduates are considering starting their own businesses at some point in their careers and this new initiative could help boost their chances of success.”

Ms Dique said Enterprise Tuesday would build on the success of the Enterprisers program delivered at USC for 72 students in January in collaboration with the University of Cambridge and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Local business people, USC students and staff, teachers and other interested people interested in attending the Enterprise Tuesday events can phone the Innovation Centre reception on 5459 4567 or register via the Innovation Centre website at: www.innovation-centre.com.au
