USC receives lion’s share of Queensland's extra uni places

11 September 2007

The University of the Sunshine Coast will receive an extra 165 Commonwealth-supported places for students next year in recognition of strong demand for USC’s program offerings in recent years.

Extra places have been allocated for the University’s new degree programs in Engineering, Psychology, Occupational Therapy and Paramedic Science and for a new Graduate Diploma in Special Education.

USC has received the lion’s share of the 200 extra places provided to Queensland, and the fourth-highest number of extra places in Australia behind the University of Western Australia, the University of Adelaide and the University of Wollongong.

Minister for Education, Science and Training Julie Bishop announced an extra 2,300 places nationwide today for areas of skills need and student demand – particularly for the training of engineers, science professionals, nurses, teachers and health professionals.

USC’s Acting Vice-Chancellor Professor Greg Hill said he was delighted in the Commonwealth Government’s show of confidence in USC.

“It’s recognition that we’re growing, we’re meeting demand and we’re going against the trend of declining demand, particularly in regional areas,” he said.

“The extra places provide a fantastic opportunity for people who want to go to university on the Sunshine Coast in 2008.”

Professor Hill said USC had focused on providing degree programs which industries on the Sunshine Coast required and which were previously only offered elsewhere.

“Our commitment as a university is to build the future of the Sunshine Coast and these new programs are going to make a direct contribution to that,” he said.
